Jasper residents rally around Fred Phillipa sii of J W Phil wife east of Jasper as he becomes one of two pilots to pass the aviation exams after testing in St Louis on November 4. A Missouri University alumnus, he is described as earnest and well educated, with hope to become a flier.
Carthage Red Cross Chapter officers and auxiliaries met at Mrs. Jane Jess’s home with Rev. Chas. Swift addressing “Women’s work in the War.” Twenty-eight Jasper Branch members attended, and a buffet luncheon followed. Donations included $1 from several ladies and 50 cents from two others. A new verse to America was circulated for singing in churches and schools. Mrs. E. W. Beatt, Jasper Branch Secretary.
Jasper and county committees report a Jasper sum of 1401.25 dollars for Y M C A war work after last week’s drive. The county panel had earlier allotted Jasper 500 dollars and urged top results. The list of subscribers reflects broad local support with many names and firms contributing in 10 or 5 dollar gifts, serving as a public receipt for the hurried collection.
Ned Frick moved his family to Joplin last week, Mrs J Frick accompanied her son and his family. Mrs L Owen, E E Welsh and W T Simmons renewed their subscriptions to The News the past week.
