H C Baker born in Schuylkill County Pennsylvania June 25 1830s died at his Jasper home November 15 1913 after a stroke of paralysis. He taught school from age 17 and worked as government surveyor helping lay out Independence Kansas. He married Laura Nichols in 1874 and Addie Russell in 1881, five children born to the latter union. He served as Missouri Pacific agent at Jasper and was long a telegraph operator with his family aiding him. A devout Christian and longtime IOOF member, he was remembered as an educated kind neighbor and faithful friend.
The Baker family expresses deep gratitude to the Odd Fellows and many friends for sympathy shown during the illness and death of their husband and father. Signed by Mrs. A. G. Baker and sons Leon Carson Lawrence and Frank Baker.
A short repair project on Grand Avenue at the railroad crossing was completed last week but halted before the eastern corporation line. The job needs continuation with gravel to finish properly, and officials should push the work to completion eastward.
RR Larrick suffered a stroke while returning from the post office to his office at First National Bank. He fell, was carried to his office, then moved to his hotel room. His left side is affected, he remains delirious at times and in pain. Mrs Larrick from Broken Arrow arrived, along with Mrs Randall and her daughter from Crestline Kane. sisters Mrs Randall and Mrs Larrick are related.
Revival meetings directed by Rev A M Dixon of Bolivar and Rev E N Garrett of Nensho continue with deep interest. Dixon’s sermons are Spirit filled and earnest, improving with each hearing. The Christian Church meetings are equally popular with crowds nightly and eleven baptisms Tuesday night plus about 25 additions to the church. Additional ministers will assist Mr Cook this week and meetings will continue indefinitely.
Monday evening announced death of Mack Tiller at his home ten miles southeast of Jasper. Son of T. H. Tiller, president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank. A well to do farmer and stock man, he leaves a wife and four children.
Mrs W C Thomas hosted the Five Hundred Club Inet Thursday evening. A very pleasant evening was enjoyed with all members present. Dr and Mrs Ketcham of Carthaven were guests. The Drovers Daily Telegraph with The News $4.00 regular price.
The paper proposes a holiday edition featuring a bright color cover and Christmas stories alongside current news. Advertisers will be contacted next Monday to justify producing a 12 page edition with seasonable material and attractive layout.
Pastor W. W Reynolds of Jasper Presbyterian with Rev Cee Lewis of Carthage Main Street Church conducted a two week revival at Irwin Church Barton county. Over the weekend eight more joined the church and ten united on Sunday, with the revival continuing.
Twelve members answered roll call at Mrs R E Hurt’s home. The Royal Family of England was the magazine topic. A guest, Mrs C Johnston, attended, and Mrs Frank A Rive, formerly of Afton Oklahoma, was praised. Mrs Mullen assisted with refreshments. next meeting with Mrs W D Mullen. Notice from the Post Office Department requires that all parcel post packages bear the name and witness of the sender written clearly to avoid delays. The rule, aimed at preventing embarrassment and inconvenience, should be followed during the holiday mailing season.
Miss Tilda Gohr and J T Collins were married last Wednesday by Probate Judge N H Kelso. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Gohr of the Zion neighborhood east of Jasper. Collins is the son of Mrs Sadie Collins of Osawatomie Kansas and has long been an engineer on the M E T Railway. They will reside in Joplin after the ceremony reported by Carthage Press.
The Taka Club held its regular monthly gathering at Mrs. W. H. Knott's home with fourteen members present. New member Mrs Sharp was welcomed as guests enjoyed Progressive Peanuts, a prizes ceremony, and a two course luncheon. next meeting will be with Mrs. A Lear.
