Uriah Smith resigns from his position as Dixie school teacher near Prenton after election. Gertrude Etter of southeast Jasper named by the board to replace him. Smith had hired a substitute for some time but stayed until after the election.
Thomas Crow 24 of Jasper dies instantly during a severe thunderstorm while driving a wagon on George Rex farm west of town. One horse killed, the other unharmed, crowing crowds gather as funeral services for Crow are held at M E church and burial at German Baptist cemetery.
The Bank of Jasper distributed Springfield pattern rifles to the business district at a nominal cost to deter robberies. The piece recalls Coffeyville’s 1893 Dalton gang fight and notes armed citizens reduce bank raids, suggesting arming again would boost protection though robbers are rare in the area.
