Lynch Hanged After Lamar County Killing Trial

Algern Jay Lynch, convicted of the sheriff and deputy killings near Lamar, was dragged from a courthouse yard and lynched by a mob Wednesday afternoon after pleading guilty to murder. He had been brought from Butler, sentenced to life, and claimed the sheriff’s death was accidental. He had a long criminal record and had escaped custody earlier.

The Man of Might serial begins in this issue

A new fifteen part serial titled The Man of Might debuts this issue and hints at film adaptations. The tale, advertised as a great story shown in many cities nationwide, lists episodes including The Riven Flag, The Leap Through Space, The Creeping Death, The Human Shield, The Ship of Dread, The Volcano's Prey, The Rescue and others.

Memorial Service Postponed to June First

Memorial day service at the M Church has been postponed to Sunday June 1 at 11 a m due to rain. The event aims to honor Grand Army of the Republic members and young veterans who served since 1861. Special G A R seats and music will feature, with invites to young soldiers and sailors.

Frank Steiner Lands After Wounding in Argonne

Telegram from Frank Steiner to his father 8 D Steiner reports Steiner landed at Hoboken New Jersey and is safe though not well. He served in the 850th regiment, Sth division, wounded November 1 in the Argonne Woods. He entered service April 26 last year and will need hospitalization here. His telegram to his late mother arrives without news of her passing. Mrs. D C Houser delivered a knitted quilt from the Jasper Red Cross to Carthage County Tubercular Hospital.

Soldiering in 40 Below Guard Duty in Siberia

A wartime letter from Cleo Haile of Company 1, Stat. Inf., A, EK, F. in Vladivostok, Siberia, April 17, 1919, recounts extreme cold, slow mail, and readers in Jasper receiving Jasper News issues. He notes weight gain, friendly locals, and Easter plans, with commentary on American dollars and conditions abroad. Also announced is County Demonstrator Mrs Irene Blood visiting Jasper June 3 at 2 10 pm at St James Hotel to meet local ladies.

Pastors to Hold Special Services in Lebanon and Jasper

The M. E. Church, South announces pastor Sam G. Keys will speak at Lebanon next Sunday at 11 a.m. on church and community matters. A sermon will follow in Jasper at 8 p.m. Members and interested residents are urged to attend.

Navy discharge brings Fred Goddard home

Fred Goddard, after about a year in the United States Navy, returned home Monday with his discharge. He made two voyages in convoy service and a single cruise to South America.
