The school board met Monday evening and elected Miss Aretha Baird as teacher for the fifth and sixth grades. The principal and a high school teacher remain to be elected. Clerk and treasurer report the district financially sound and nearly debt free next year. Students should mail their letters by Monday evening.
H O Corde, Jasper merchant and civic figure, died at 11:50 after a railway crossing accident near Jasper. He was found by a southbound freight crew, fatally injured, and transported to Carthage Hospital then Springfield for burial. Witnesses are absent. cause remains speculative. His death prompted communal mourning and tributes from local officials and clubs.
The annual high school baccalaureate exercises will be held at the M B Pohlrey next Sunday morning May 21. Dr J J Martin will preach the sermon. The program prepared is an excellent one and the usual crowded house is expected.
Mr and Mrs J Ny Marah entertained at dinner Sunday. Guests included B E McClary and wife and their little daughter of Carter, wife and R H Wolfe and family.
Trustees call a general cleanup day at the Jasper Masonic Cemetery on Wednesday May 1 inviting all interested to bring tools for yard work. A list shows many subscriptions raised for cemetery improvements with amounts from 2.50 to 102.00, including donors from Missouri Kansas Arkansas and Michigan.
The Jasper High School senior class closes their work and prepares for commencement on Thursday night the 25th at the opera house. Proceeds from admission will cover expenses and the annual school plane. Class members include Harold Carr Hazel Carter Martha Curtis Mendel Drake Nellie Hughes Velma Mackey Dennis Steiner Florence Stratton Mae Wood and others. The program features Invocation Welcome Reading Vocal solos duets poems and a class chorus with diplomas awarded by Mr Hayzlett and Rev Wm Chatten. Benediction concludes with America.
The Jasper Commercial Club adopts resolutions praising H O Corde as an active faithful member and public spirited citizen. It notes irreparable loss to the club and community and extends sympathy to his family. A copy of the resolutions will be mailed to the family. Signed by W C Thomas N H Patterson and A F Drake.
Improvements at Jasper’s City Park are rapid and visible with a cement snow bridge across the draw, a pipe railing, and arches of 2 inch pipe at the park’s foreheads and northwest entrances. A rose rambler and honeysuckle vines are being trained, a new bed replaces the croquet ground, seats are repainted, grass is mowed, and a rove bed is planted. Dr Knott planted a canna, and croquet players moved to a new ground eastward. Take a walk and see the pride in progress.
The Jasper High School Alumnus banquet will be held at the schoolhouse Friday night May 26. A fine program with out-of-town talent is planned. Officers seek a large turnout from all members.
