A wartime letter from Larry Tabler now on the front in France describes dugouts, shells, and rats. He writes from a trench home on April 7 1918 asking for Hershey almond bars and spearmint gum and recalls meeting an old Missourian from Everton while sharing a burnt supper amid shelling.
Federal Food Administrator announces bread and cake auctions at Red Cross and related sales will not be held. Committees and contributors are warned to govern themselves accordingly. Subscribers urged to check current status and renew if due.
May 6 2018 Flour dealers must limit sales to six pounds per person per month within a purchaser’s household. Families of four should receive no more than 24 pounds per purchase. Smaller sacks will be used. dealers should stock small original mill packages and reduce all cases to six pounds per month per person. No town household may get more than 24 pounds at once. farm households face two four pound limits and larger sacks only when small bags are unavailable. Dealers may not sell to non regular customers without proof of no prior buying elsewhere. Breach may cut supplies. County food commission advised for questions. Details the National Red Cross Second War Fund campaign May 20 to 27 requesting an additional hundred million dollars for relief efforts. Describes frontline nursing, aid to the aged and children, leg and arm factories, canteens, rest stations, and the call for local and township committees to meet the goal. Preston Township plans and notable participation figures are noted, with strong exhortations to contribute to support the war effort.
Home canners may buy one 24 pound package at a time for preserving and canning. After exhaustion, purchases of 25 pounds are allowed. Buyers must sign a certificate sent by dealers to County Food Administrator Fones in Joplin, declaring intent to purchase for canning and to return any unused surplus.
Ka 2 Dealers must see that the certificate is properly signed and the blanks properly filled. For use other than canning and preserving, retailers of sugar must sell to consumers in towns or cities not more than 5 pounds and for consumers in rural communities not more than 10 pounds. Every retailer must practice strict economy in the sale of sugar to ensure supplies for canning season. Hoarding will not be permitted and retailers are warned against selling excessive quantities. Sugar cannot be sold by Missouri retailers above y cents per pound without a Federal Administrator permit. Buyers are advised to purchase b pounds for 46 cents or 10 pounds for hi cents.
A Mothers Day program will be observed Sunday morning at the M E Church with the public invited. Revival services begin Sunday night led by Rev J Odom, a conference evangelist. Odom previously preached here and is well liked for his strong preaching and engaging manner. Public encouragement to attend.
Red Cross sale slated for Saturday will aid Jasper Swim land Zion and Salem branches. The Indies contributed many items including hay corn grain calves pigs sheep goats flour canned goods quills rugs and chickens. Auctioneers Boland Radford and Rex will conduct the sale as a large crowd is anticipated with visitors from Carthage Lamar and Golden City expected.
A dinner was held at the Frick home last Friday for the birth day anniversary of Mrs Jacob Frick. Present were all of her children and several grandchildren including Mrs C L Spaid and Ned Frick and wife of Joplin Mia Fannie Snyder of Kansas City Ben Frick of Idaho and Mrs J L McNabney of Southwest City.
