A reader, C. M. Wells, Blue Star school board member from Barton County, submits a direct critique of the county Unit Bill. He objects to shifting local control and funding away from local boards, fears reduced local oversight, and predicts political fallout as the measure proceeds toward a vote.
C M Wells denounces elected officials and legislative maneuvers that pass buck and shift responsibility. He warns against letting a party of farmers control schools and asserts that citizens will not permit their education system to be handed to them.
The Jasper Commercial Club adopted a resolution urging voters to support a proposed road bond on June 28. It argues the small tax increase of about 20 cents per hundred dollars valuation is fair and necessary to secure federal and state aid, preserve road projects, and prevent loss of existing work and equipment. The measure targets improving roads around Jasper with most costs borne by surrounding farmlands and city residents alike.
