Jasper bond issue defeated in tight road district election
Jasper Special Road District commissioners failed to gain a 2 3rds vote for a 40000 bond to fund road improvements. The Tuesday election drew strong opposition from farmers and townspeople, with figures showing 200 against and 282 for. A commercial club meeting highlighted arguments for the bond, while observers noted costs to a 160 acre farmer could be about 25 a year in interest, a claim disputed by many. The defeat keeps options open for redrawing the district boundary or retrying the measure.
