The Washington Star jokes about the name Mary Ann versus Mare Annette in a July Fourth note. It reports a Jasper town meeting held after press time to decide Fourth of July celebrations and urges local entertainment so Jasper does not rely on neighboring towns.
Dr J K Schooler announces retirement from the Jasper drug business after fourteen years. He sold stock and business to Claude Hill, praising him as a competent pharmacist. Schooler will continue medical practice and is fitting offices over the Joe Deardorff store. he invites patrons to visit.
Farmers recall last year's harvest while floodgates opened Sunday night and rain delayed fields. Wheat was light last Friday and Saturday, with early restart projected Monday then damp conditions. Tuesday to Friday brought mixed skies, sun afterward, and work resumed on weed control with some clean corn noted on George Parr's farm.
Invitation to a community basket dinner at the Jasper Tabernacle for next Sabbath. Attendees are urged to bring their dinners and join in a day of services with friends in town and country.
A narrator recalls canceling the local newspaper after a sharp editor outwitted him. He mentions taming debts and paying for seven years of service, then quitting when insulted. The tale ends with a vow to end the paper rather than be outsmarted.
Jasper a town of 800 on the Jefferson Highway and Missouri Pacific Joplin branch 159 miles south of Kansas City sits in a productive agricultural region. It has a four year high school, concrete sidewalks, a city park, five Protestant churches, a live Commercial Club, electric streets and homes, a large fair, a good band, modern stores, two banks with assets total 273 002 86, and three grain elevators handling wheat hogs cattle and horses.
Charley Hayzlett, longtime grain businessman and civic leader in Jasper, filed for county treasurer as a Democrat and received early party backing. A former Lincoin Township farmer turned Jasper resident for 11 years, he has served as councilman, mayor, school board president, and Jasper Commercial Club president, with prior tenure as city treasurer. His broad farmer network and proven integrity are cited as assets for the ticket.
The call of the President summoned Missouri guardsmen to mobilize. Jasper’s Glenn Holmes of Company C, Second Missouri Infantry left for Nevada Monday as Lieut. Earl Hooten sought recruits. National Guards may relieve regular troops at the Mexican border and forts, with regulars handling fighting while the Guards train in Nevada for two weeks or more.
Notice to farmers stating insurance for grain in stacks bins or elevators is available. Mutual will not carry this risk but rates on wheat in stacks are described as very reasonable by Ki L Crawford in fourth-tf.
Jackson Bros sold their general store and building last week to T. W. Ballew Loan and Investment Co. of Kansas City Missouri. A. H. Handy of Spickard Missouri will manage the store for the company and operate as Jasper Mercantile Company. John Jackson remains to wind up affairs but has no further plans. George Jackson and Roy Avery plan to move Cash Clothing Store to Picher Oklahoma where groceries and dry goods will be added. The community regrets if the Jacksons depart Jasper and wishes prosperity to the new ownership.
J J Martin, pastor, leads Sunday School at 9:15 with Gus Campbell as superintendent. Worship and sermon at 11:00 titled He Cry for Bread. Epworth League at 7:00 led by Mendel Drake with Roy Bowers speaking On Is it ever right to do away from home what one would not do at home. 8:00 p.m. Long Service and sermon Prisoners of Hope. Midweek prayer meeting called for tent meeting.
M. BR. Church South announces services on the first and third Sundays in Jasper with morning and evening worship, second Sunday in Salem, and fourth Sunday in Boston with Sunday School at 10 a.m. A.M. North League meets at Jasper and Salem. Prayer meeting at Jasper every Wednesday evening. Everyone is cordially invited. Pastor A. Lewis.

XN. TH. Patterson and family spent Sunday in Peirce City as guests of Joe J. Manlove and wife. Mr Manlove is a candidate for Congress on the Republican ticket. Mrs. M.A Quillin and son Em met of Picher Oklahoma returned home last Friday after a month’s visit with Mrs. Quillin’s mother. Emmet had a good case of measles while there.
