A December letter to the editor from D H Wampler of Jasper argues the Commercial Club has benefited the grand vicinity and should be credited for its work. He suggests the majority’s funding helps Jasper residents and country neighbors access the park and streets.
Beginning January 1 the subscription rates to the Vintage Weekly Press the Jasper County Democrat and the Greenfield Advocate will rise from 1.00 to 1,560. The papers join thousands of country papers increasing prices in a broad industry shift.
The Jasper Commercial Club reports its first year ending December 21 1916 noting 42 members and 140 monthly dues initially, growing to 47 members and 131.50 monthly income. Efforts included paving rock roads along the Jefferson Highway improving city parks and seeking a tuberculosis sanatorium site and a water works project with capital interests.
The Alpha Club gathered Tuesday December 14 at Mrs J P Leiss home. The Christmas decor featured bells holly and a central tree laden with gifts. After business and a social afternoon members opened gifts and wished each other a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, with plans to meet January 2 2017 at Mrs Bernard's.
Mr and Mrs Thos Marsh observed their golden anniversary on December 20 in their Jasper home with children and grandchildren present. They married in Milford Bracken County Kentucky in 1800, and after a long life together in Jasper County, Colorado and Carthage they remain in good health and surrounded by friends.
The Jasper Commercial Club met in regular session. The secretary’s annual report commends the group for valuable community service over the past year. A committee was appointed to solicit membership and prepare for the new year. Annual officer elections are set for Thursday January 1.
M I Embree of Clark Missouri arrived to visit his ill brother Or Embree in this area. After his departure, his grown son was thrown from a horse and killed. A telegram then summoned Embree to return immediately, deeply affecting him. Lace Embree accompanied him back home.
Funeral services for the late H. Beall were conducted at his home Monday at 10 o clock by K Walls a Christian Science reader from Joplin. A large attendance saw the body laid to rest at Waters Cemetery. John Beall of St Joseph and Mrs Nora McCune from California were among the Beall family guests. Uriah Smith bought a farm in Harvey land Kiowa County Kansas last week and is noted as a progressive Jasper County farmer.
Christmas morning bank robbery in Jasper caused a small haul after intruders drilled into the vault and opened safe boxes. Only about 3200 was found in a pigeon hole. robbers fled north in a car as residents heard an explosion between 5:15 and 4:10. Depositors insured, no other losses reported. Local social notes follow with gatherings and illnesses among residents.
