A quake struck California City with guard units deployed as fires and damage followed. Officials report injuries and property loss while emergency crews work to secure affected areas and protect remaining structures.
Earth tremors centered in Brawley and nearby towns in California’s Imperial Valley caused about 100000 in damage. One seriously hurt by falling debris. several minor injuries. Hotels closed. looting arrests reported. streets lit again after outages. emergency crews patrolled as shocks diminished.
New York March 2 Matthew Woll acting president of the National Civic Federation and vice president of the American Federation of Labor accused the communist international the Worldwide propaganda agency of the Soviet government of inciting riots in New York and other cities. In a letter to commercial organizations in 500 leading U S cities and to members of Congress Woll deplored the use of unemployment for communist ends and said they aim to push the jobless into revolutionary violent channels.
Batavia police reported Nicholas Marotte aged 36 of Batavia was killed and two others escaped death when a car plowed into a telephone pole one mile east of Batavia today.
BERENGARIA March 2 Rear Admiral Hilary P Jones, en route homeward due to illness, passed a comfortable night and his condition was slightly improved today.
Detroit report says Governor Eugene L. Brock will seek warrants to arrest marathon dance conductors for employing five women beyond legal hours in a Detroit event ongoing since last November. The 106 day effort has seen exhausted dancers collapse and rest periods cut to ten minutes per hour, with warnings of subpoenas if warrants fail.
Taft remains near death as doctors report no change in condition and note a slight fall in blood pressure. He was sleeping when physicians visited late tonight, with earlier bulletin saying his strength and vitality were waning after days of faint rallies.
London dispatch reports Charles Francis Adams, secretary of the navy and delegate, signaling the American stance as negotiations enter the seventh week. Adams says Americans ready to sit till a settlement and believes Japan and the United States are nearing an understanding.
Police traced 88 sticks of dynamite stolen from a Bronx construction firm to a suspected Communist plot. Special agents blocked powder magazines across the Bronx as authorities warned dynamite could be used for mass demonstrations planned for March 6.
In Los Angeles on March 2 a jury found Mrs May Otis Blackburn guilty on eight counts of grand theft from Clifford Dabney, accusing her of defrauding him of 40000 to fund a book purportedly dictated by archangels for her Divine Order of the Royal Arm of the Great Eleven. The trial drew a large crowd earlier but was sparsely attended at verdict. The Great Eleven had mountain headquarters and a follower colony nearby.
Clemens Herschel, 88, nationally known hydraulic engineer and former president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, died at his Glen Ridge home. He devised the Venturmeter, a no moving parts device measuring liquid flow in conduits and received the Elliott Cresson gold medal for the invention. He authored several hydraulics books.
Spartanburg County peach growers light smudges in orchards as temperatures drop below freezing. At 10 pm the mercury stood at 25 degrees, new blossoms forming on peach trees after a spell of warm weather.
Albany March 2 The Senate and Assembly expect a busy week sending bills to Governor Roosevelt after the executive budget clears. The budget totals 311 million with reductions of 2 to 3 million. Public hearings loom for old age security and public service law measures as the dry enforcement bill stalls. Senate pages note 106 bills passed, Assembly 65, while governor action totals lag behind 1929. Senator Knight says hearings follow commission findings.
New York March 2 Governor Roosevelt declares home rule essential to a united country and opposes expanded federal control over utilities banks business and education. He warns against commissions and regulations eroding state powers and stresses minority rights and state sovereignty in the federal system.
Denver officers fatally shot William De Marko 26 as he knelt before a safe at Puritan Products Company while a kits of tools lay nearby. Fellow suspect W M Erickson 25, jailed for inquiry, had told police he planned to help but balked. De Marko and his wife planned to move to Lorain, Ohio with Erickson to visit De Marko’s father.
A 10-year-old youth, Bonifacio Torres, who held a posse of about 200 men at bay in an all afternoon gun battle near Javales, N M, is dead. Three peace officers were wounded and hospitalized. Officers say Torres died from a gunshot wound fired by a sheriff's posse while resisting arrest. The siege began when deputies tried to arrest him for incorrigibility. The fight lasted until dark with multiple injuries and a large responding posse.
In Budapest the audience at a Rigoletto performance hissed Amelita Galli Curci, a renowned American opera star. Whistling interrupted her singing, many spectators left their seats, and some demanded refunds of their ticket money.
Paris March 4 Premier Tardieu’s second cabinet is officially formed and approved by President Doumergue. He plans to present it to the Chamber Wednesday and seek a confidence vote, aiming to return the French delegation to the London naval conference. The ministry is broadly representative, including Radical Socialist members, with leaders Chautemps Herriot and Daladier opposing Tardieu yet influential in parliament.
Official reports state the Prince of Wales has contracted subtertian malaria while in the jungles and has returned to Nairobi for treatment. The fever is said to be running its normal course and a full recovery is expected within a few days.
Paris Evans Eacies, 58, Republican member of the state legislature since 1921, died today in Reading. He was a past president of the American Federation of Railroad Workers.
