A ten man gang robs the Western Union Telegraph main office in Detroit's financial district, fleeing with about $3,000. An attempted trap by a woman customer at the revolving door ended with a threat to her life. Eleven employees and twenty customers are herded as robbers seize cash from drawers and attempt to open the safe.
Bishop Francis J. McConnell, head of the Federal Council of Churches, argues the church has a role in industrial strife and should tolerate radical expressions by clergy and social workers. He says the church is an organism with a right to corporate utterance to advance social justice.
President Hoover requested 45000 to cover half the cost of a joint U S Canada study into how powering tides by damming Passamaquoddy and Cobscook Bays in Maine and New Brunswick could affect fisheries. Albany February 4. William A. Prendergast announced he has resigned as chairman of the Public Service Commission after a conference with Governor Roosevelt over the state fight against a 14 million dollar telephone rate increase by the Newark Telephone Company. Prendergast cited a difference of opinion on public utility regulation and said his resignation would take effect February 28. He described the interview with Roosevelt as very pleasant and noted a personal reason for leaving after twenty years in public office.
Andy Graham, a former deputy sheriff, testified in Oklahoma City that after being recommended by a women’s civic club he collected protection money from bootleggers for Sheriff Fox. He said one third of the receipts went to him, two thirds to Fox, and Fox claimed a cut for the county attorney.
