Boy Scouts Court of Honor in Jal High School
The Jal Boy Scouts held a Court of Honor at 7:00 P M October 1, 1946 in the high school auditorium. Twenty five boys participated in the candlelight service with Jenie Burke and David Baum as flag bearers. Merit badges were awarded to Gene Armstrong Larry Poage Harold Gillet Jenie Burke Jr and David Baum. Ross Easterling received first and second class badges. Jo Bill Brinin stool received first class honors. Troy Posey earned second class honors. Many others earned tenderfoot badges. Former scoutmaster Wisdom has been transferred to Hobbs. Principal K B Walker spoke on community scouting efforts.

On October 7 the journalism class received a letter from Mr Jud Dixon of the Santa Fe New Mexico Bureau of the United Press Association. Dixon sought to appoint a student from The Jal Flare to represent the United Press at Jal for better New Mexico coverage. The position pays little but offers valuable reporting experience.

The Jal Chamber of Commerce votes updated the Executive Board. Dr J T Brady resigned as vice president and M F Mitchell was elected to replace him. Homer Pender was chosen as President to succeed R W Harris who was transferred to El Paso.

Mrs. Klepper Becomes Postmaster at Jal
Mrs. Cortez Klepper was sworn in October 8 as Jal postmaster replacing Mrs. Y. K. Helen Childers who resigned after eleven years. Klepper, a four year clerk, qualified with an A-11 average after postmaster examinations. Childers moved to Carlsbad and left the fourth to third class transition during her tenure, which then advanced to second class.

New Highway To Andrews
The first of October blades began cutting a new eastward road to Andrews from Blocker Service Station. The straightened route runs parallel to the old road, staying about fifty to sixty feet away, crossing four miles from town and then paralleling again on the opposite side. The school bus route shows the road as remarkably straight for long distances.

Dreamboat Flight Puts Heavy B-29 in Air From Honolulu
Lt. Col. Beverly Warren, brother of Mrs. O M Stewart of Jal, piloted the Pa cusan Dreamboat on its Honolulu to Cairo flight. The bomber carried 12,892 gallons of gasoline, the heaviest load yet for a B 29. Warren, an expert at heavy take offs from Mariana missions, flew the mission.

Lightfoot Returns Home on 60 Day Leave from 25th Infantry
Pfc. Truman A Lightfoot Jr arrived in Jal on October 8 to visit his parents Mr. and Mrs. T A Lightfoot. He is in the 25th Infantry on a 60 day leave and has been in Japan eighteen months, with a discharge anticipated in November. He is brother of Clara Lightfoot a high school sophomore.

Jonnie Sallye In Wreck In Mud Puddle Injuries Reported
On October 9 a car driven by Otis Pharr carrying Sallye Wray and Jonnie Hager collided with another vehicle. The door opened on the right side and both passengers were thrown into a mud puddle with minor injuries. Pharr escaped injury.

Citizens met in Jal high school gym at 7 30 P M October 10 to organize the Jal Youth Activity Drive. K B Walker acted as temporary chairman and led discussion with J L Burke and Mrs G Fussell of the Jal Chamber of Commerce pledging townwide support from American Legion churches lodges and other groups. A temporary committee was elected to organize the drive with John Curtis J T Brady Bonner Ivey George Davis and Mrs Clarence Armstrong named.

Last Rites Held For Mrs Hicks In Texas Church
Funeral services for Nora Ellen Martin Hicks were held Friday at the Church of Christ conducted by Pastor John Fulmer. Born December 2 1889 in Alabama she moved to Texas at seven and married Perry Charn Hicks on December 5 1909 in Hugh Springs. Survivors include six sons Arnet Aavis Martin Clifton Jim my of Jal Travis of Fort Worth two daughters Mrs Wilbur Hayse Mrs Eunice McGraw and Jane Ann of Jal plus two sisters one brother and two grandchildren.

New School Nurse Named for Southern Lea County
Miss Mary L. BeDell of Peoria Illinois has accepted the Public Health School Nurse post for southern Lea County serving Eunice Monument and Jal schools. She trained at St Francis Hospital Peoria and earned a B S in Public Health Nursing from the University of Michigan. She is a 27 month Army Nurse Corps veteran with 26 months overseas in Africa and Italy.
