Phillips Lets Contracts On Plant Near Camp

Phillips Company this week let two contracts for preliminary work leading to their new natural gasoline plant to be built near their present camp. Perry Sullins was awarded a contract to building residences for additional employes, and Sikes and Ingle got the contract for concrete work on the plant foundations. Production tanks are being moved this week and shipments arrive daily. El Paso Natural Gas Company's plant moved a step nearer when a water well at the site was started and plant work was to begin soon after December 1.

Three Jobs Of Paying On Docket In Jal

Work began this week with caliche surfacing on three blocks around the town square. Two more street projects were approved for Jal, including Highway 18 resurfacing through town and black topping to the El Paso Natural Gas Camp, planned for fall if weather permits. State officials, led by Lt. Gov. James Murray, confirmed approval based on estimates, with a possible spring delay for the El Paso Camp road due to cold weather.

Red Cross Drive Reaches Halfway Mark in Jal

Jal reports the Red Cross drive is halfway to its 100 member target with 60 memberships recorded. Chairwoman Mrs Peter Bish expresses confidence the goal will be reached this week or next and urges residents to join when asked, noting Red Cross as the community’s main charity effort.

Postoffice to Close for Thanksgiving Holiday

Jal postoffice will close today November 23 in observance of a Thanksgiving holiday proclaimed by President Roosevelt. The office will reopen November 30 as many celebrate. 500 Subscribers Set In Youth Drive Plan

A Jal Youth Activities program targets 600 subscribers for a 1940 budget with 200 for supervised summer activities 50 for camp transport 200 for building improvements and 150 for the area Boy Scout council. Local volunteers met at the school to finalize plans including a summer playground program and a scout hut.

Panthers Work Hard Ahead of for Finale

Jal Panthers push through two weeks of hard daily workouts before the Hot Springs game next Wednesday. Otis Pharr, first string quarterback, was injured in practice and may miss the game. Coach J J Smith and Superintendent J L Burke Jr noted interest in a playoff among leading state teams for a post season game, while Roswell and Las Cruces show less interest ahead of the November 29 meeting.

Big IOOF Program Planned for West Texas Event

An IOOF lodge installation is set for December 2 at the institution of a new lodge drawing members from West Texas and New Mexico. Degree teams from Hobbs Carlsbad Clovis and Roswell will perform with about 150 members expected. Officers install at 6 pm in the high school gym, dinner at 7:30 pm, then program resumes at the gym. Dr. Kibbe coordinates. Hobbs IOOFs celebrate second anniversary December 4 with open house. December 5 Rebekah lodge to be instituted.

A district court suit filed in Lovington last week seeks to quiet title to oil land in the northal area. Plaintiffs M. W. Coll and others contest royalties and mineral interests in parts of Sections 29 30 and 31 Twp 23 Range 37 against Eva F. Blinebry and A H Blinebry.

Hobbs Ladies Defeat Jal Bowlers by Large Margin

The Hobbs ladies bowling team defeated Jal women in a team match on Sunday. Hobbs won by a margin of 312 pins, taking the honors in the Jal bowling event.
