Eunice Par Busters to Play Jal's 10 Best

Jal Country Club members compete this week listing scores for the ten best. the top ten face Eunice Club in a three game series Sunday. It is the first challenged meeting since the club reorganized and built a new course north of town. Interest is high as members push hard while some keep scores private.

Ranch Dinner Celebrates Sub Debs Pin Exchange and New Members

The Sub-Debs held a triple purpose gathering at Joyce Brininstool's ranch to honor Eloise Barron relinquishing her pin to Jo Large, welcome new members Marion Carew and Lois Mosley, and recognize others receiving pins. After a dinner, attendees rode horses at multiple ranches before returning home.

Guestless Jal Rotary to Install New Officers

Jal Rotary Club held a luncheon without guests for a second time in almost a year. Malcolm Madera led the program. Brooks Brininstool gave a brief life sketch and J. D. McClintock was welcomed as a new member. Installation of officers is planned for July.

Speakers Club shifts meeting night to Friday

The Speakers Club met Thursday night with Mrs. Brooks Brininstool acting toastmaster. After a banquet, Johnnie Connell spoke on training pilots for a proposed Air Force expansion and George Davis discussed Electrification of the Eldorado Oil Field. John Benton debunked astrology as a science. Mrs. George Davis was named toastmaster for the next meeting on June 7. Meetings will be on the first and third Fridays.

Roberts Elected Noble Grand of IOOF Ledge

IOOF Ledge members met in regular session and conferred the third degree on three members including T. 3., Maupin, B. C. Madison Jr. and Paul Bebee. Dr D. H. Roberts was elected noble grand with Frank Butler vice grand G M Riley secretary and Casey Cabool treasurer. They will be installed the first Monday in July.

Miss Rose Reese of Washington DC spent Sunday night with her sister Margaret Massey before continuing to Santa Monica California for a vacation. Reese works for the federal government.

Jal Democratic committee endorses establishing a National Guard aviation unit in Hobbs. Telegram to Adjutant General Russell Carleton cites facilities at Hobbs Port approved by the Civil Aeronautics Administration and argues the unit protects vital oil fields and pipelines with Hobbs named as center. Delegates Chosen to Back FDR at State Convention

Delegates from Jal elected include Mrs Anna Bish Robert Madera Jr and Mrs Jonnie Connell Malcom Madera and J L Burke Jr to represent the town at the Santa Fe state democratic convention. Peter Bush attended as proxy for Robert Madera. Lieutenant Governor Jim Murray also elected as a state democratic delegate. Committeemen praised state officers and their work.

A Jal W. M. U. meeting at the First Baptist Church drew 33 attendees. Reports on WMU work were presented and the event concluded with SubDed girls songs and orangeade refreshments.

Phillips Petroleum Company officials from Bartlesville toured Goldsmith properties in the Permian Basin during an annual inspection trip. The group flew into Midland and traveled by bus, concluding the visit in San Angelo on Sunday night.

Bay man to get new trial after high court reversal

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reversed Charles W. Ely Jr. death sentence for the killing of Earl Burkett in Monahans and remanded for a new trial. Ely, 18 at sentencing, will likely be tried in Winkler County in fall term. Ely fled to Winkler after the fatal shooting in Monahans city jail while being questioned. The trial had marked Ward County’s first death penalty in 24 hours.

Savings Bond Sales Show Strong 1989 Totals

More than $1,000 in United States savings bonds were paid in 1989 to earn the fal office 3lot rating among third class post offices in the state. The total bond value purchased was $1,031.25 out of $1,474,8938.75 in the state during 1939. Eunice, a second class post office, led purchases of $65,118.75 and Hobbs led per capita first class post offices with $54,037.40.

Epworth League Picnic At Flare

Mr. Ray Wadsworth and Mrs. Floyd Stuart led young Methodists from Epworth League on a Friday night picnic at the flare area. They played games then shared sandwiches cookies and lemonade.
