Camp Road To Be Paved By State
Governor John E. Miles announced a state county paving program in Hobbs. The Jal to El Paso Natural Gas plant road will be paved, with the contract already let. Black topping from Hobbs to Yoakum County will be bid June 8, and Hobbs Carsbad Highway will connect with Lovington Artesia Highway providing access to the Mallamar Field in Eastern Eddy County.

Lightning Strikes Homestead Ignites Fire In Marshall Home
Mr and Mrs Blackie Marshall lost much of their possessions when a lightning strike gutted their house. Firefighters faced access issues but saved part of the exterior as Elmer Turner owned the home. Several other lightning sparked incidents were reported in nearby houses during the electrical display.

Scouts Seek Funds for Camp Trip to Hobbs
Six Boy Scouts plan a Weed camp trip June 4 to 11. They will travel by special bus from Hobbs at a $2 fare each, totaling $12, but sponsors are lacking. Names include Edwin Baird Duane Rogers John Wiley Cunningham Wayne Wadsworth and Charles Huffaker. Civic Club sponsors hope to raise the fare.

State death penalty sought in Ely trial over fatal shooting
After a day and a half of deliberation the jury in the Ely case remained out at noon as prosecutors pressed for a death penalty for Charles W. Ely Jr. accused of killing Earl Burkett. Ely testified briefly, describing the gun encounter and claiming he did not intend to shoot. The trial opened Tuesday with testimony from law enforcement and Burkett family members.

Revival Opens At Church Of God In Jal
