Social event at Mrs G A Smith home honored Mr and Mrs Alvis Maxwell recent newlyweds Forty two guests attended and offered gifts The hostesses included Mrs Harry Scott Mrs G A Smith Mrs L D Hare and Mrs Luther Dooley Refreshments were served after gift opening and games were played
A girl weighing eight pounds eight and one half ounces was born this week in a local hospital to Mr and Mrs N P Norton of Jal. Doctors said both the mother and the infant are in excellent health.
The Methodist Church junior class plans a Friday night slumber party at Mrs. C. V. Walden's home. They will meet at the church and travel together to the residence.
A caliche truck and a light sedan collided at the Stockton Highway turn at Grandfalls edge. Mrs. C Weber of Wickett sustained a leg injury. her husband Mr. Weber and truck driver Walter Hays were unharmed. The sedan was heavily damaged and the truck less so. Hays was turning off the pavement toward the new Imperial Road where he hauled caliche.
Evangelist Carl A. Collins from Sulphur Springs will hold gospel meetings at the Church of Christ in Grandfalls starting July 8. Local minister George True Baker will preach the opening sermon. Collins has visited the area twice before and expects to renew old acquaintances as the two week revival proceeds.
Chavez files candidacy in Washington for the Democratic nomination for United States Senate in New Mexico. He cites lifelong NM residency and service, his Senate and House record, senior committee roles, and a pledge to run without personal rancor while urging Democrats to choose the best candidate.

Rev. G. L. Keever, healing from appendicitis, thanks a large Sunday crowd and notes modest changes to service times. Sunday School now begins at 9 30 a m and church ends at 11 30 a m. Visitors Mr and Mrs Tom Speer of Strawn, Texas, join relatives.
F A Henthorn of Jal underwent surgery at a Kermit hospital this week.
Loretta Young stars opposite Ray Milland in a breezy Columbia comedy about a spinster author and a doctor who pretend marriage. The film, praised as bright in a season featuring Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and His Girl Friday, opens at the Rex Theatre on Sunday. Meanwhile local highway progress reports note 2,000 yards of caliche laid daily on the Grand Falls-Imperial road base with full completion of Ward County’s 5.64 mile segment by August 1, as Crane County work is also advancing.
