Jal's football team the New Mexico State Champions extended an invitation to Lubbock High School for a postseason game after winning the Texas Interscholastic League championship. Superintendent W B Irwin declined, citing league rules prohibiting post season games.
The Flare missed a week due to a vacation. Post office workers faced threats of mayhem and a lawsuit for delaying the paper. Texaco wells and a Colonel title for Spring Pete Bish are noted with local city council naming a street after her.
Jal High School basketball players have been getting into shape as they prepare for a season that begins with a 1940 victory target. They host the Wyk Wildcats Tuesday night at 7 30 and then travel to Carlsbad for a Friday and Saturday tournament on the 12th and 13th.
El Paso's meeting highlighted William J. Fink as the selected candidate to fill the council seat after Bill Collum's resignation. The council authorized 875 for water bond interest coupons and approved standard payrolls and bills. Two streets west of the Stuart-Herwig Addition were closed while two new streets east of the school were opened and named Anna Drive and High School Drive.
Albert Mills a Denver City man was killed and five others injured in two holiday highway wrecks ten miles north of here. Mills died when his car collided with a truck driven by Buck Keaton of McCamey. Keaton and his father G W Keaton were injured. The crash occurred Christmas Day near here with witnesses Deputy Elmer Turner and City Officer Jewel Owens. Donnie Amburger and his parents also sustained injuries. Claude C Pace of Lovington was not hurt.
Rotary Club met at its luncheon with several short talks by members and guests. George Davis gave a thumbnail sketch of his life. John Beckett of Los Angeles attended as a guest and Mayor C E Lawrence of Hobbs spoke on fraternity among Rotarians.
C B Norton of El Paso Natural Gas Company received medical treatment for a back injury this week.
Deputy Turner reported a peaceful Christmas in Jal with no fights or arrests. The highlight was the arrival of two Negro babies, believed to be the first ever born in Jal. One infant was to Willie May Pickens, while the other mother could not be identified.
Bennettville, a former shantytown south of the El Paso Natural Gas plant, may gain a new post office. The Post Office Department seeks applications for postmaster of the proposed fourth class office, due in Denver by January 8. At least two applications have been submitted. The town was laid out and named last spring by James Bennett.
State district health officer O E Puckett reassures Jal residents no epidemic risk from four smallpox cases in a single family. Superintendent J L Burke says 95 percent of students are vaccinated and a re check of all students will be done by the State Health Department. Unvaccinated new students will be vaccinated and any child with a failed prior vaccination will receive another dose. The four cases, in the Charlie Grimm family five miles from town, were well isolated and quarantined.
The El Paso Natural Gas Company starts a 1.5 million dollar gasoline plant this week with many workers arriving Friday or Saturday. Construction will last about four months, with 27 permanent staff planned and two ten hour shifts during rapid building. A lunch stand is planned near the site and a small camp may be built for workers.
Principal K. B. Walker reports fifteen new students enrolled this week. Eleven elementary students joined the grade school since the first, and four new students entered the high school, reflecting Jal’s growing population.
Mrs B. A. Rea won first prize of $10 in merchandise at the New Mexico Electric Company in the home decorating contest sponsored by the PTA. Second prize went to Mrs J. D. McClintock, also in merchandise from the same utility company.
A. P. Maxwell received medical treatment at Community Hospital this week.
