Butane Truck Fire Near Kermit Jal Area

A butane truck caught fire Monday December 6 three and a half miles south on Kermittal highway after a faulty engine. Driver Bill Cave tried to extinguish it but the blaze could not be stopped and departments from Jal and Kermit allowed it to burn due to explosion risk. Spectators and vehicles were halted about a half mile away as flames were visible for miles.

JAL Men Visit Family Ranch Near Roswell

Mr Fred Cooper Mr Mark Cooper and Mr John Bob Pyeatt visited their jointly owned ranch near Roswell to round up brand and sell cattle. Carl Cooper and Melvin Pyeatt sons of Mark Cooper and J B Pyeatt accompanied them.

Miss Helen Grimes area executive director of the Girl Scouts spent Friday December 6 in Jal. She conferred with local girl scout leaders at the home of Mrs Halley Ray to discuss next steps and community activities.

Seniors warned on enlistment offers from armed forces

A school issued pamphlets from the University of New Mexico Navy Department and Army engineers. The UNM program offers two years training to officers with tuition and board paid plus a salary and home trips. Army material highlights GI Bill rights and civilian job prospects.

Evangelist Addresses Rotarians On Nine Tater Types

G S Westbrook spoke at the Church of Christ on November 26 to Rotarians. He illustrated faults through the nine Tater brothers with parables and cautioned that Hesitator’s missed chances cost progress. His tale ends with Calf No 3 revealed as a bob tail.

Montgomeries in Hobbs Car Crash Involving Drunk Driver

Last Saturday night in Hobbs Mrs. Frank Montgomery and her daughter Helen were riding in a car that was sideswiped by a drunken driver. Mrs. Montgomery escaped injury while Helen sustained light cuts and bruises after being thrown toward a car mirror. The other driver tested positive for drinking.

State Teachers Convention Held in Albuquerque

Albuquerque hosted the 59th annual State Teachers Convention from November 25 to 27 drawing about two thousand educators. Speakers included Dr. F L Schlage on World Education and Dr. Ralph McDonald on Education and the World Outlook, with discussions on curriculum trends and business education issues. The gathering urged updated commercial department standards and better placement, ending with a stenography film.

An eclipse of the sun was visible at Jal and surrounding countryside on Saturday November 23 from 8 45 a m to 11 15 a m It was reported that in the southern United States a three fourths total eclipse could be seen by residents there

Jal scene features Mr. S. R. Cooper age 72 reflecting on decades in New Mexico and Texas as juniors discuss teen canteen and student council. Dr. J. T. Brady and Mr. Walker back council with site plans for a recreational building. election methods and a governing constitution are set to be drafted for student approval.

California Visitors Return From West Coast Trip

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Speer and Mrs. Walter Pendleton returned from California where they visited their sons Bill Speer and John Pendleton and Leslie Smith. The three lab boys serve in the Marine Corps in San Diego. Bill was hospitalized for knee trouble from a 1945 football injury and may receive a medical discharge. Pendleton visited John and Leslie at the rifle range during their one hour visiting periods. On Sunday she shared a picnic lunch with them as they were off duty.
