Elk and Snow Drive Elk Down in October Section

An unusually heavy October snow in this state drove thousands of elk from the mountains to the Jackson valley near the town. Warm Chinook winds melted much of the snow, sending elk back up the foothills, though they cannot go far unless warm weather continues. Officials do not expect large crops of elk but have purchased 1400 tons of hay to feed them as ranchers near the valley shot them from yards and fences. Local residents, including Mrs. Jacob Johnson and son Lloyd, arrived from Ogden, while others, like Sam McBride, left for Twin Falls, Idaho, leasing their ranches for several years. Several families departed for Salt Lake City and Reno, with new ranch purchases and a postmaster appointment noted.

A current bridge is high and dry after the river channel shifted years ago, with riprap needed to stabilize banks. An improvised ferry has served since the bridge failed.
