Bridge Loss Persists on Snake River with New Spans Needed

The Snake River bridge remains unusable as the main channel shifted, making the approach washed out. Locals discuss a ferry, with two new river spans required to reconnect the line. Freight losses rise as Congress delays funding, and the bridge may not reopen for another year. A baby boy was born to Mr and Mrs A J Whidden at St John’s hospital. G W Kelly and family visited town. Jackson's Hole Man Arrested on Desertion Attempt

Nels Hoagland of Kelly was arrested Monday by Deputy U S Marshal Branton and brought before U S Commissioner Oro Wilkins in Jackson on charges of attempting to induce a U S soldier to desert. He waived preliminary examination, posted 1000 bond, to appear in Cheyenne Federal Court November 12, 1917. Neighbors defend him as a longstanding, law abiding resident despite wartime sympathies. Nearby notes include ROE in Jackson schools, Pure Food Club gathering, and local travels and visits.

Claude Simpson J received a letter Wednesday from his son Claude and up to four companions from Jacks Hole who joined the regiment of engineers at Pittsburgh. The letter headed Some place in France says to address Sgt C D Simpson 1 8 Engineers care of the Adj Gen Army Washington D C. He was made Sergeant on July 16. He says all the boys are well and not to worry, though they crave news from home.

Wyoming troops among first to go to France

Cheyenne Leader reports that the Forty first Division, including Wyoming’s Third Infantry, will be sent to France after training at Camp Green, North Carolina, with men from Washington Oregon Montana California Idaho and Wyoming prized for outdoor fitness and strong physical standards despite wartime screening for tuberculosis.
