Good News for Homesteaders Act Approved by Congress

Washington reports that Congress on July 24 approved a homesteading act allowing absenting from homesteads during parts of 1919 or the current year. Eligible claimants may obtain this by filing a corroborated affidavit before the local committee, certifying the absence is due to drought and won’t affect final proof.

Local hog shipments head to Driggs from park party

W. E. Lloyd and W. H. Daniels hauled two loads of hogs to Driggs last Friday, sold to Driggs shippers. Rodney Jones led a Tuesday park party including Mesdames Jones Ely Lloyd and Deitz of Cheyenne.

Frontier Celebration Draws Big Crowds and Record Times

Cheyenne annual Frontier Celebration July 24 to 26 drew 4,600 on opening day, up from 1,500 last year. Jack Joyce set a Roman race time of 50 16 seconds. Ed Burgess led steer roping at 22245 seconds, Mike Hastings bull-dogged a steer in 11 seconds to set a world record, Ed McCarty won broncho busting, Walter Sterling captured steer roping, Ruth Roach won ladies broncho busting and related events, Kitty Canutte took money in ladies relay, and overall attendance and entrants marked the best show yet.

Prominent Visitors Visit with Editor and Mrs in Jackson

Prominent visitors include Rev. J. H. Spindler and Miss Net Cooke of La Grange Missouri who arrived in Jackson to meet the editor and wife. Spindler, a Baptist minister with eastern pastorates, is to begin work in Cincinnati Ohio on September 1. Cooke, a teacher with a long Northeast Missouri public and high school record, recently finished a term in high school.

Woman Die by Own Action Near Snake River Bridge

A report to Jackson states Mrs Robt Little of Ashton Ida committed death by own action. She and her husband had been at Ed for weeks. The act occurred near the Snake River bridge with no known motive. Deputies followed the scene overnight while the husband previously ran a Moran store.

Maize Grown In China

Indian corn, or maize, is grown extensively throughout the entire section of China. It is generally planted after the wheat is harvested and in fields with beans, the beans ripening after the corn is harvested. The lack of scientific seed selection prevents the production of as large a yield as would otherwise be obtained.

Courier’s new drive to grow readers and improve service

The Jackson Courier editor writes that under Mr Baxter the paper has seen growing activity and a promising start. He notes a mailing list strong for a small town, aims to raise subscriptions to 500, and plans new features while improving the Ready Print veter an edition.
