The United States cotton crop on September 25 was 60.8 percent of normal, down from 69.2 percent on August 25 and well below last year. The condition implies a lint yield of 168 pounds per acre and a total of 10,950,000 bales, versus 16,135,000 bales last year, with state-by-state comparisons provided.
Mrs. G L Williams aged 50 died at her Henry county home after several weeks illness. A Jasper county native and half sister of Jackson police chief W D Pope, she leaves a husband two sons Boon and Frank Williams of Lakeland Fla two daughters Mrs R W Cash and Mrs Otis Hanes of Unionville one brother D W Pope of Ocilla one sister Mrs Hartwell Faulkner of Monticello and several half siblings. Funeral was held at Cord church Jasper county at 3 PM Friday.
Jeng committee on poultry asks for entries for the Butts County Fair Poultry Department. Exhibitors should contact Mrs L D Singley or Mr L L OKelley to report entry numbers. The association must know total exhibitors to arrange coops and prepare for a feature poultry show with many entries.
Dr J E Woods of this city has been named a member of the Board of Founders for Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. The honor enables him to aid the cause of education. Jackson Presbyterian church recently gave $1000 to the university building fund, marking the church as a progressive supporter.
The Jackson Chero-Cola Bottling Company filed for charter in the superior court. Incorporators are J. B. Carmichael W. W. Cole and T. B. McMichael with Col. W. E. Watkins filing the petition. Capital stock set at 3000 dollars in 30 shares of 100 each. The company plans bottling Chero-Cola and other sodas and a milling business producing food tufts from grains.
All departments report progress as the fair nears. A Friday meeting for officers and directors is set for 3 PM October 8 in the courthouse. Members urged to bring exhibits Friday or Saturday, entry autos for Tuesday parade, and timely fair subscriptions.
Pete Harkness a well known colored farmer living on E L Smiths place was shot and killed Friday morning between 10 and 11 oclock Clem Darden a negro boy about 17 is charged with the crime Darden stood in the doorway and fired both barrels striking Harkness in the head and heart Officers found Darden in the woods and arrested him His father witnessed the shooting a woman is alleged to have been involved Harkness was a prosperous farmer of the county

Hon S H Mays has been appointed marshal of the day for the Butts County Fair parade on Tuesday October 19. A military man with Civil War service he will ensure order and punctual marching. A committee including F B Etheridge and Prof W P Martin will plan the route start point and hours and publish details when ready. The parade will likely form at the public school building proceed up Third Street and around the court house square before speeches in the court house.
The annual Sacred Harp sing will be held at Sandy Creek church on Sunday October 10 with an all day session and a noon dinner. Music lovers are invited to attend and participate in the day's exercises.
Work to beautify the court house square near done with a strong cement retaining wall, tile approaches to entrances, and a cement walk around the building. Grading and sod are planned for spring, with trees and plots to be arranged by local ladies. J. R. Lyons supervised the project and earned wide praise for the quality.
Premium list for the county fair noted no prizes for pigeons but exhibitors will present pigeon shows. Prizes were announced for the event with first and second prize of one dollar per pair and a blue ribbon for third, plus a 25 cent entrance fee per pair.
The Jenkinsburg school opened Monday with about seventy five pupils on the first day. Heavy weather kept many students away, with enrollment expected to reach a hundred soon. Prof. A J Fleming and a capable faculty lead what promises to be a successful year.
