Georgia May Have Paper Mill

At the Georgia Weekly Press Association meeting in Macon a plan for a $2,000,000 Georgia paper mill to supply newspapers in Georgia, Florida and Alabama was discussed. A committee was named to meet with financiers to pursue erection and operation by December 1917.

Moonshiners Held Bound Over For Federal Court

Harvie McMullan and Jim Suggs, both from Butts County, were tried before U S Commissioners Martin and Erwin on illicit distilling charges. They were bound over to the district under bonds of 156 dollars each after a raid near Jackson Macon Telegraph.

Boll Weevil Does Heavy Damage Across Cotton Belt

J A Taylor president of the National Ginners Association reports about two million bales of cotton valued at 290 million dollars were destroyed by the boll weevil. Nearly 79 percent of the cotton belt was infested this season with damage increasing 34 percent over last year, including new territory and the Atlantic coast. Jackson Post Office Issues Record Money Orders

The Jackson post office issued 1250 money orders in October, the largest monthly total in its history, surpassing the previous peak of about 1180 during the holiday season. A notable portion of orders were for whiskey, indicating strong business activity.

Georgia Products Day Sets Prizes For Nov 18 Dinners

Georgia observes Georgia Products Day across the state on November 18 under a governor issued proclamation. Weevil Invasion Reported In Dublin by W A Smith

W A Smith of Dublin district brought to town a bottle of boll weevils found on his farm. The insects were identified by several observers as the Mexican boll weevil. The pest has invaded Butts county this season and will affect next year’s crop planning.

Doctor Canterberry Leaves Jackson for Birmingham Start

Dr. R. S. Canterberry who spent days in Jackson and considered settling here chose to return to Birmingham Alabama. He departed for Birmingham Saturday night.

Mr Fretwell Appointed Carrier on Rural Route

Mr W W Fretwell has been appointed carrier on rural route No 6 from Jackson with the appointment taking effect last week He passed the civil service examination several months ago and secured the post when a vacancy arose A vacancy remains on route No 7 from Jackson with Mr Baxter Watkins serving temporarily until a permanent appointment is made.

Papers to Buy Large Quantities for Georgia Weeklies

The Georgia Weekly Press Association in Macon authorized a committee to travel to New York to investigate buying newsprint in bulk for all member papers. Pooling purchases could secure lower prices, with newsprint at about 7 cents per pound in ten lots, and mills offering less. J A McAntifre was empowered to appoint the committee to seek a multi-year supply and possible central ordering point, likely Macon.

Mrs. W. M. Keaton Dies in Arizona

Mrs. W. M. Keaton died in Montgomery Arizona on Saturday November 4 after years of illness. The body will be taken to Indian Springs for funeral services likely Sunday conducted by Dr. Van Deventer of the Baptist church. Survived by husband Basil Keaton one son three sisters Mrs H L Daughtry Miss Jennie Bryans Mrs Bessie Bryans two brothers Oscar Bryans Indian Springs and Dombey Bryans California.

Public sale liquidates several properties including gin outfit and land

A sheriff led public sale drew a modest crowd with several parcels sold. Items included a gin outfit from I B Carmichael estate bid in at 65 by Joe Lane, a Jackson house and lot for Rufus Woodward at 90, a Ford car for F B Out house at 105, the old Preston fifty four acre farm at 23 50 per acre, a North Mulberry street house and lot bid in at 1550, 87 acres sold to J M Leach at 24 per acre, and 70 acres also to Leach at 926.

Death Claims W R. J. E Bankston in Jenkinsburg

J J Bankston aged 63 died Monday at his home in Jenkinsburg from stomach trouble and complications. He lived previously in Jackson and was son of Hon William Bankston long time clerk of Butts superior court. Survived by wife Miss Thomas of Spalding, two sons Harold of Dublin and Collins of Hastings Fla, two sisters Mrs Louisa Thorntoin and Mrs Bettie McGough. Body brought to Jackson. funeral held Tuesday at 11 with grave service by Rev F G Spearman. Interment City Cemetery.

Mass Meeting on Flour Mill Erection in Jackson

Citizens of Jackson and Butts County are invited to a mass meeting at the Jackson court house on Saturday November 18 at 10 o clock am. The gathering aims to discuss establishing a flour mill as boll weevil threats heighten the need to grow food crops and avoid wheat to flour conversion delays. Mayor J T Moore urges attendance.
