Representative C. A. Towles was appointed to three committees by Speaker W. H. Burwell. The panels include General Agriculture No. 1, Railroads, and University of Georgia and its branches. Though Towles is a first timer, he is expected to be highly active for his constituents.
The Alexius Commandery won a silver libation set for second best attendance at the 1914 state conclave in Augusta. Now on display in Jackson Mercantile windows, the triangle shaped set includes a flagon twelve candlesticks and a dozen cups. Members of Alexius Commandery Knights Templars of this city take pride in the distinction and its future as a permanent possession.
The Co-Operative Gin Coal and Ice Company announces installation in Jackson of a Lum mus Automatic Air Blast ginning system. Ready for the first bale, they invite farmers to inspect the latest machinery, guarantee satisfaction, and offer seed purchases at top market prices, promising cleaner seed and better looking bales.
The College of Agriculture in Athens announces hog cholera serum reduced to 1 cent per cubic centimeter effective July 1. This is the fourth price cut due to better facilities and higher output. Serum available from the State Veterinarian in Atlanta, orders must specify college serum.
The Indian Springs Holiness camp meeting runs August 5 to 15. It marks the sister anniversary of the founding, 25 years since the first session. Leaders include Rev. H. G. Morrison D D Rev. J. L. Brasher and Rev. Arthur Moore. Music by Charlie D Tillman and a large choir. Grounds and cottages improved. accessible roads. Railroads offer round trip fares. anticipation of record attendance. Officers: Rev. G. W. Matthews president J. M. Glenn secretary.
A Black boy named Jack Wadley was arrested after an all night chase in Monroe county for stealing a bicycle from Woods-Carmichael in Darktown Friday night. Police recovered nothing as the bike was thrown into a pond near his home. This marks a second bicycle theft linked to the youth, who previously stole from Edwin Bryant and recently completed a chaingang sentence.
Mr. S. H. Mays delivered a nearly grown cotton boll to the office on Tuesday. The boll came from Ed Henderson's Worthville farm and was harvested in June.
At a Tuesday meeting the Butts County Board of Education voted to extend the school term to nine months, adding two months to the prior seven month term. The change affects only a few schools. Tax rate for school purposes was discussed but no levy action was taken, to be decided later with request to the County Commissioner. Attendance was full.
The First Farmers Bank held its annual meeting Tuesday, reviewing a satisfactory year. Directors were refreshed with G F Etheridge J C Jones T P Bell J S Carter S H Mays L O Benton J B Carmichael C B Biles G P Saunders C R Carter. Officers re-elected include L O Benton president G P Saunders J C Jones vice presidents J B Carmichael cashier and W H Wilson assistant cashier.
The Fourth of July was observed in Jackson in a quiet safe and sane manner. Banks closed and post office kept Sunday hours. Rural carriers had a holiday while stores stayed open. A heavy rainstorm began early and persisted, leaving the town sparsely populated.
The Jackson Argus was sold Tuesday at public sale to J. D. Jones editor of The Progress. The Argus will merge with The Butts County Progress to form The Jackson Progress-Argus serving Butts County with consolidated circulation and advertising reach. The new publication keeps the same policy and aims to serve local interests.
A baby chick with four feet was shown this week by Capt. F. L. Walthall. The legs were close together and perfectly formed. The chick died soon after hatching. If it had reached maturity it would have been an even greater curiosity.
