More Pure Bred Cattle Needed in U S Dairy Herds

Chicago reports a National Institute of Progressive Farming survey showing only about 75,000 of 23 million U S dairy cows are pure bred. Using pure bred Holstein Friesians could raise milk and butter fat yields dramatically, with Iowa State College data citing 83 percent milk and 58 percent fat gains on first crossbreeding and even larger gains in subsequent generations. The Northwest leads dairy improvement, with a well funded, community owned sire effort and a major dairy show planned for Minneapolis next October.
