School Meeting Arrangements and Improvements Suggested

A local notice urges the district to hold a school meeting on April 6 to elect directors and a county superintendent under the new law. It calls for attendance by both men and women, discusses voting on terms and taxes, and proposes topics to improve schools including rooms, grounds, water, lighting, libraries, teacher quality, and home life integration. If time runs short, a second Arbor Day meeting on April 9 is proposed to plant trees and set policy.

Big Spring School Notes and Farming Update

Big Spring notes rain for late season, bottom land rich and farmers busy plowing for oats and some sowed already. Houck infant ill with croup improving. Peters moved his house closer to his barn and will relocate this week. School closed Friday evening the 12th with a well attended program of songs recitations and plays. Mr. Proffer completes his third year teaching and is thanked for his guidance aiding students to climb the ladder of learning.

Burned to Death Near Pocahontas

Conrad Tallhamer 75, a recluse living with his son near Pocahontas, died from fatal burns after his dress caught as he tended a brush pile at home last week. The son was away when the incident occurred and found his father after returning.

Miss Ruena Shaner spoke at Rock Hill near her former home on Sunday March 21. The audience overflowed the hall as she entertained and instructed. Delightful Surprise Birthday Party at Behrens Home

Thursday evening last Mrs. Charles Behrens celebrated her birthday with a large gathering at the Behrens residence. Guests enjoyed songs, dominoes, and refreshments on the veranda. At nine o’clock Will McCombs delivered a china closet as a gift. The party included numerous couples and individuals such as H. Wolters, R. M. McCombs, Alvin Ross, J. Mabrey, Marvin Haw, J. Heinberg, P. Snider, Miss McCombs, Colonel Hamlin, Major Crow, T. W. Birmingham, Laurence Wagner, Lena Boss, Lulu Hempkampf, and Tillie Peterman. The house was decorated with red and white carnations and potted plants. Guests departed wishing Mrs Behrens many happy returns.

County Court Road Petition Ordered Change and Vacate

In a tie of road petition by S. A. Abernathy and others the court ordered the change and the old road vacated. The highway commissioners were instructed to view the site on the ord Browning road, estimate bridge cost, and report to the court. Engineers viewed the bridge near J. Idlewell on the upper Millerville road, to estimate cost and report proceedings. Bonds on certain roads were prevented and approved for two individuals. A dramshop license was granted to C. D. Boswell, Starnes & Searcy, and Ed Beiswingert. Constable J. H. Howard’s report from Byrd township was examined and approved. J. E. Schmuke, circuit clerk, presented costs in criminal cases before justices totaling 525 dollars. Bills allowed including Fred Hente as special commissioner for Egypt Mills road and Bainbridge road. Reps received, warrants ordered, accounts allowed. H. E. Alexander paid one quarter salary of 200 dollars. Pk Vineyard reported smallpox cases. L. J. Zimmermann’s coffin for pauper listed at 35 dollars. A. I. Barrett and A. F. Drum noted for special road work. Court adjourned to Wednesday, March 1.
