Weevils in corn and peas at Georgia Experiment Station
The Georgia Experiment Station describes a carbon bisulphide treatment to control weevils in stored corn and other grains. A tight crib or quarantine box is filled, cotton lint soaked with the liquid placed in the box, and vapor allowed to penetrate the mass. Treatment lasts 24 to 36 hours, with safety precautions due to flammability. The remedy is sold by Edward R. Taylor of Cleveland Ohio.

Pinching Potato Vines Questions Answered
Horticulturist Hugh N. Starnes reports pruning sweet potato vines does not boost yields enough to cover labor. Vines may reduce tuber size in nitrogen rich or wet seasons but not in dry conditions. Pruning or loosening generally not profitable on ordinary land. Vines make good green stock feed but siloed vines become slimy and are not advised for ensilage.

Pokeberries and Cowpeas as Fertilizers and Feed
A Georgia reader asks about dried pokeberries and market buyers. Director Redding notes dried pokeberries fetch 4 to 6 cents per pound, with Allaire Woodward & Co. of Peoria as buyers. He also compares cowpeas to cotton seed as fertilizer, estimating one bushel of cowpeas equals about 21.5 bushels of cotton seed, with cowpeas worth around 75 cents per bushel and cotton seed about 80 cents, suggesting using cowpeas as manure rather than selling for under 30 cents per bushel.

Best mode of propagating grapes from cuttings
Hugh N. Starnes explains season and method for grape cuttings. Pruning time varies. Georgia weather makes early winter pruning common. Use current year canes about lead-pencil thickness. cut near the lower bud and at a 45 degree angle above the upper bud to distinguish bottom and top. Longer cuttings may use multiple joints with the lowest bud, then up to the highest bud.

Propagating Grapevines from Cuttings in Top Soil
Instructions for making rootlets and aerial growth from grape cuttings. Select six inch to twelve inch long pieces, bind in bundles, bury tip down with butts six inches deep, mark variety, and dig up after last frost. Prepare furrows three feet apart, lay cuttings at four inch spacing, cover, and press. For Labrusca types like Concord, Niagra, and Aestivalis types like Warren or Delaware, success varies, with one-year vines preferred.

Celery Cultivation in Georgia Profit Potentials
Horticulturist Hugh N. Starnes outlines celery varieties, soil needs, and planting timelines for Georgia. A spring branch irrigation site is best. use White Plume for early crops and Giant Pascal for later plantings with careful bleaching and earth up for winter storage.
