Remarkable Blind Madison Furniture Maker and Usurer
From Madison and vicinity comes a profile of Blind Willis, a fifty-something Black man born in Greene County who became blind after drinking pink tea. He travels city streets unaided, earning by woodwork and furniture making, and he collects debts by walking to the debtors, even tracking one man to Atlanta to recover funds. He is said to be a mathematical problem solver, industrious, and self-sufficient, denying alms and living by honest work.
