D T Barnes former Marshall of Iuka was shot and killed Thursday morning February 5 on the square in front of Hall's Dry Goods Store by J C Spears who came from Savannah Tennessee a year ago Spears was arrested and jailed then moved to Corinth Barnes a Mason and Christian church member died leaving a wife and two sons Ed and John Barnes funeral at Oak Grove cemetery.
Sardis reports pleasant weather and thriving Sunday School with weekly services. Married couple Elton Bishop and Alma Ridge celebrated last Sunday. A church singing drew a large crowd. new organ installed. Local events include visits to Lyceum in Tishomingo and a serenade by the Sardis community for the newlyweds. Ed Stepp has returned to Sardis and is hoped to stay.
A petition from W J Turner in Tishomingo County seeks a pardon from a three year prison term for bigamy imposed at the August 1919 Circuit Court term. Turner asks the governor and Board of Pardons for clemency, pledging reform and a lawful life if released.
Mississippi Farmers Union leaders convened in Jackson on January 28 issuing plans to reorganize at county courthouses on February 28 at 11 a.m. Dues for 1920 are due, $2 yearly plus a $1 initiation fee for new members. State Treasurer Erma Smith urged prompt remittance. A state convention in Jackson is set for March 16 at 10 a.m., with counties entitled to two delegates and locals to one.
W T Bazzell notes bills seek a statewide good roads system with a 25 million bond. Plans include motor vehicle taxes or a highway commission, but Section 170 reserves county boards full jurisdiction over roads. The House passed a concurrent resolution to submit a constitutional amendment to allow statewide road control next November.
