Population shifts show wide state disparities 1900 to 1910

The report details substantial state by state changes in population over ten years with gains ranging from 5.6 percent to over 100 percent. West and Pacific states display the largest increases while Iowa Missouri and several others remain under 10 percent. Urban growth in cities of 25 000 or more drives much of the national rise. northern regions lag behind the western surge.

Montana gains a seat in the next Congress

Washington reports Montana’s population at 376 053, increasing the ratio of people per House member from about 190 000 to roughly 120 000. This change would raise Montana’s representation to one seat and bring the House to about 418 members from 392. Montana’s 1900 census figure was 243 329, up 54.5 percent.

Washington reports the thirteenth decennial census estimates the United States and possessions at 101,100,000 with 91,972,262 within North America. Montana Congressman Pray disputes Montana’s figure, noting about 500,000 instead of 376,000, a 54.56 percent ten year rise.
