Jennie Prince Black, longtime Irvington resident and author of I Remember, is remembered for her deep devotion to Irvington and her role in preserving its history. The Irvington Parent Teachers Association will hold the first meeting of the current school year on Monday evening October 1 at BP M in the school auditorium. Parents may tour the building after refreshments served by committee led by Mrs Edward Wininger.
A public opinion poll by a community relations committee reports 85 percent of respondents find hospital charges fair for patients who can pay. Lieut. Gay Alexander Hunter, son of John Hunter, received the Navy Silver Star for meritorious achievement as a Night and Day Fighter Intercept Officer on the USS Hancock during Pacific campaigns including Iwo Jima Leyte Luzon and Okinawa. The award cited 20 successful interceptions from October 9 1944 to April 9 1945 with a notable April 1 1945 interception amid enemy evasive tactics aboard a battleship fleet.
Mayor Dunson G Smith announced Irving will start the National War Fund drive on October 1. He urged residents to exceed the higher $12300 quota as the campaign serves member agencies needs in the coming months. Funeral held at Bennett Memorial Chapel Taery awn for Adam Duncan of Taster Roa East Ivington who died at Gras lands Hospital in his eighty second year. The Irvington Kiwanis Club plans a variety show with noted talent to fund the Youth Service Program. The event scheduled for October 25 features a general committee led by W B Readey and includes chairmen for advertising entertainment and tickets among others. Proceeds will support club youth initiatives.
Miss Florence Behrens daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Behrens of Grinnell Street will marry Corporal James Murray son of Mr and Mrs William Murray of North Ferris Street on Saturday October 6 at the Presbyterian Church. Behrens is a graduate of Irvington High School and Empire State Business School and is employed by Burns and Roe in New York City. Murray, a Georgetown High School alumnus, recently returned from overseas service. Major W A Murphy, former Levington mayor, left on May 10 for Manila with the Air Force command of Gen George Kenney.
The Irvington Public Library trustees announce Miss Knodel’s retirement effective September 1 after more than years of service. Barbara Nicholoy of Syracuse University Library is named successor, arriving October 1. A public reception is planned October 13 at Town Hall to welcome her.
A model airplane show opens fall activities at the Children’s Museum in Irvington on Sunday afternoon September 30 from 3 to 105. Thomas Herbert and his club of young men and boys from White Phin will demonstrate gasoline powered, rubber band, glider and other model airplanes. An annual pet show at the Children’s Youth Council Se Meld is planned for October 6 with cats, dogs, birds, and mats among entries. Ms. M. Diy Bilstone will be general chairman as museum classes begin October 1 with a needle crafts meet at 3.
