Police Prevent Possible Fire at Ardsley Avenue Home

Chief Charles Habermeh and PAL James Mondelli of the Irvington Police. They stopped a potential blaze by disconnecting an overheated control fuse in the electric system of Maitland F. Griggs home at Ardsley Avenue and Clifton Place. Insulation was burning inside a box connected to a television set.

Former Pupils Honor Miss Helen Stubbe Retired Educator

More than 150 former pupils celebrated Miss Helen Stubbe, retiring director of physical education for girls in the Irvington schools, at Patricia Marshy’s Candlelight Restaurant. The gathering included delegates from Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and the West, with Mrs. Kenneth Billington as toastmaster. A gold wrist watch and a high fidelity record player were given as gifts, and the committee was led by Mrs. James Murray.

Greenburgh Considers Incinerator Survey Costs

Greenburgh town officials and the Town Council discussed funding a $1500 survey to assess the costs and requirements for an incinerator serving the unincorporated areas including Dobbs Ferry Hastings Irvington and Tarrytown. A preliminary study had begun under late supervisor Charles D Millard with plans for a Grass Sprain Road site but stalled by neighboring property owners. Retired Navy Captain Laffan Honored for Boise Action

Hold Services for Mrs John Gilcht. Captain John J. Laffan USN, born in Washington and educated, retires today as rear admiral at the United States Naval Supply Depot in Bayonne NJ after thirty years. He led the Boise in the Pacific, earned the Navy Cross for controlling batteries under fire, and survived battle damage and heavy losses.

Limits Now on Bargain Rate Ticket

State of the New York Central expands its bargain-rate Manhattan Trip Ticket to cover any train into Grand Central Terminal or to Weehawken starting Saturday July 2. The one day round trip to Grand Central and back offers a 25 percent saving. Tickets sold at all stations from Poughkeepsie to Lakewood inclusive on the Hudson Division and other listed divisions. When ticket offices are closed, tickets may be purchased from a train conductor.

Gloria Byrne Weds James Weddle in Irvington Ceremony

Miss Gloria Byrne of 35 South Broadway Tarrytown wed James Weddle of McKeesport Pa at Irvington Presbyterian Church. The ceremony was led by Rev. George M. Whitmore at 2 45 PM with a Chantilly lace gown. A reception followed at Rock House Yonkers and they plan a Mexico trip before settling at 120 North Broadway. Weddle is a Marine Corps veteran and sales manager for Pittsburgh and Temple Fast Division of National Gypsum Company.

Youth Center and Plan Church to Hold Summer Services

Irvington youth center runs a summer recreation program at Memorial Park with registration ongoing through next week led by director and staff. Weekday activities include baseball, archery, dramatics, tennis and an Olympic day, with a Protestant church union summer schedule starting July 3 at 10 am across St Barnabas, Irvington Presbyterian, and St Paul’s Methodist churches.

Four Injured in Crash Before Murtha Home Sunday

Four motorists were injured in a crash when their car struck a utility pole in front of former Mayor Matthew J. Murtha’s residence at 127 North Broadway just before five o clock Sunday morning. Adolph Ciderman Arvids Kullis Gunars Cimbulis and Mrs Cimbulis were taken to Dobbs Ferry Hospital with Kullis and Cimbulis detained as patients. Police from Kingston and nearby towns assisted.
