The Irvington High School commencement held June 21 at Town Hall featured top awards to Mary Elizabeth Magennis and Thurber H. Bierce for high Regents counts and averages. Miss Magennis received the Helen Gould Shepard Scholarship to Vassar, Thurber Bierce the NYU scholarship. Rev W B Irwin delivered the address on The Value of Knowledge as diplomas were distributed by R G Abercrombie.

Westchester Drives for Babies Gain Momentum in County Meeting

Miss Jarrold Honored Before Departure From Irvington
Mrs William Roy hosted a Ladies Aid gathering on North E street for Miss Helen Jarrold who will soon leave Irvington. A music recital at Hillside last Saturday by the Choir Boys Vacation Fund proved unique and entertaining. The event raised the needed funds for the boys vacation thanks to local friends and neighbors.

Tragic Car Accident Kills Boy in Ardsley
A four year old boy, David Smith, died after a car accident near Elmford while returning from Harmon. The Smith family, Cushman, and Mrs Chesley were in the car. David ran behind as Chesley retrieved a hat and was caught by the wheel. Medical help arrived but he died within ten minutes at Dobbs Ferry hospital. Funeral held Monday at home, burial in Sleepy Hollow. The Loyalty Club announced its last meeting of the season at the High School with speaker Miss Fleming from New York City. meetings resume September 1.

Irvington pays final tribute to Private Phillip McGovern
Private Phillip McGovern of the A E F died after being wounded in action on June 11 in France. A Westchester youth and one of the county’s first to enlist, he landed on French soil a year ago this week. Parents Mr and Mrs Michael McGovern received official notice of his death. He was 19 and earned a noble sacrifice, with Irvington planning memorial honors near the upcoming National day.
