Commencement programs opened Friday at Irving School with exercises. The following night events moved to East Irvington and Monday to Irvington Grammar School as 19 seniors graduated. Principal Rev. Robert MacGowan spoke as part of the ceremonies concluding a successful term.
Voters defeated two propositions totaling 516000 to buy land and build or modify schools in Greenburgh District 8. A separate 490000 plan for alterations to two existing buildings and 26000 for land grading for recreation were also rejected. The Hillside Avenue polls opened Tuesday between Tend 9 pm with results announced by James J. Elder, district board president.
Trustee W Murphy designated captain in Divington of the Drive For Nomina tors. Local committee lists Lawrence Tankers as county campaign chair with Honorary Chair Lavinia Taylor and officers including John Bloomfeld vice chairmen Dietrich Connors DrAgostine Koster Catarano Moyer Stebbins Baker Brady Duval Goodwin Grady Jr Gov Goehken Murphy Sturtevant and officials Laedke Brady James Brady.
The Garden Club presents Miss Amanda Friberg, trained kindergarten teacher, as director for a park daytime program in Memorial Park for children aged 3 to 6 during July and August. Agnes Behrens aided by arranging the gift and volunteers will support the effort, seen as a relief for busy mothers in Irvington.
Patrolman John Rudick won with a score near 961 in a Treington Police Department shooting contest held Wednesday off Cyrus Field Road. He fired 93 in slow fire 98 in time fire and 98 in rapid fire. Edwards Ley was the next best shot in the exhibition at police headquarters.
Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the Photocolor dispute as towns vetoed Joseph Shaluck. Town Counsel Gerald FitzGerald says the receiver may propose a out of court settlement of about 1000 dollars. The West County Children's Association launches its annual drive to fund sending county children to camp this summer. Salvation Army announces the Ardsley camp Ashford Hill Retreat opening this month. Admiral Farragut remembrance includes a dawn flag raising at Fulton Park services at Grace Episcopal Church and a three day naval visit with USS Brooks and 4 officers. Lewis Joseph Ferris and Anthony Anable. The Pack will meet Wednesdays.
The Edward Jenkinson Parochial School held its annual graduation with Rev. Thomas J. Denton delivering the address and distributing diplomas and medals. Miss O'Meara earned the general excellence medal, Joseph Kristoflki won the gold for Christian Doctrine, and William Meara the gold for Application. The ceremony included Benediction and music by Miss Margaret Owens. Also noted is the death of Edward Jenkinson, former yardmaster for the New Haven and Central Railroad, at his Irvington home after six months illness. survivors include widow Esther Moss Jenkinson and two sons.
Outdoor symphony concerts open July 2 under Mann W Merkel and the Westchester County Park Commission. The Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra with 55 players plus 10 guest artists will perform classical and operatic works. Soloists of world renown will headline under Dr Karl Lorenz. Shows run July 2 16 30 August 6 13 27 September 3 17. afternoons at West Grove Pavilion Glen Island and evenings at Tibbetts Brook Park Yonkers. 4 200 to 8 10 PM and 8 00 to 9 30 PM respectively.
The WPA announces completion of a preliminary chronology of Wesenes mnty events, a day by day index being compiled by four staff with Westchester County Historical Society cooperation. J Tuckley Hrgan, WPA district director, says the project will aid students and officials as it progresses. Continued on Page Two.
The Greenburgh police department will receive a new two way radio system within 90 days after the Town Council awarded the contract to Charles J Bodnar Company of Eastchester, the lowest bidder among three firms. Judge to sit at Hastings Police Court and police to receive new uniforms were also approved.
Mrs Mary Marie Calvert widow of Rev John Ji Calvert resident of Bi Retiro Lane estate died suddenly at New York residence. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 10:30 am at El Retiro Lane address with Rev Robert MacGowan of Irvington Presbyterian officiating and burial in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. She supported Westchester and New York charities including Robins Nest St Faiths House Hudson River Community Music School and Rabb’s Hospital. A sister Mrs L Emmett Holt of Greenwich survives.
Judge James J. Lyden presided over one of the season's most productive traffic court sessions. On Wednesday morning, 16 offenders appeared and were assessed an average fine of about $8, totaling $60 in fines.
Mr and Mrs Artur J Crisnerd and their son Arthur of 24 Main Street travel by motor to California with Mrs Angela Smith of Spiro Park. They will return in September.
Congress approved a special bill to allow Tomio Soto a Japanese child refugee to return to the United States and seek citizenship after being barred from deportation. The measure, supported by Rep. Charles Silard, aims to permit Soto to reenter the country where he lived during childhood, despite prior alien status.
