Legends of the Shawangunk and Its Environs review notes
A book review praises Legends of the Shawangunk and Its Environs by Philip H. Smith, with forward by Carl Carmer. The collection gathers legends and frontier tales from the Shawangunk region in Orange Ulster and Sullivan counties. The critic notes lack of documentation but says the stories reveal frontier life, tone, and memory, with Smith preserving storytellers’ voices and spirit. The review questions biographical detail about Smith but highlights the work’s strong sense of place and era.
