Charles Habermehl, a native of Irvington and a fixture on the Police Department for 36 years, died suddenly in a moment that stunned the village. Known for meticulous duty and quiet kindness, he guided many with sympathy even when enforcing the law. His absence leaves an irreplaceable void in the community.

Louis Lupi of 15 East Clinton Avenue died at Phelps Memorial Hospital North Tarrytown after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception with a High Mass of Requiem. Interment was in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. He came to the United States in 191? born in Roma. survived by wife Mary Baldi Lupi, three sons Alexander Frank Lapigo, Patsy Lupto, three daughters Rose Dinunzio Eisie Birdsall Agnes Scogna, 46 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mrs. John H. King of 816 North Street White Plains died Monday after long illness. Funeral services were held at St Barnabas Church with Rev H August Kuehl officiating and burial in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Born in Ireland she came to the United States in 1908 and lived in Irvington 1907 to 1946. Survived by husband two sons John H. King Jr of Hartsale and Frederick J. King of Haworth and a daughter Mrs George Willinger of West Dury.
Thomas DePaoli married Lorraine Kositls daughter of Mrs Stephen J Kosi a of Warburton Avenue Hastings on Hudson last Saturday at St Matthews Catholic Church Hastings. Rev Robert Brennan officiated with Andrew Sivick maid of honor and James DePaoli Jr best man. The reception was at Scappy Harmony Inn Dobbs Ferry and the couple plan a New England Canada trip before settling on Main Street Irvington. Ross Gary Pickus son of Mrs George Weiner was elected Alstorian at Washington and Lee University after Irvington High School graduation and Zeta Beta Tau membership.

Sylvester McCarthy, former village fire chief and longtime employee, died in Dobbs Ferry Hospital after several weeks illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with burial in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. He lived in Trempton eight years and resided with his sister at 4 Park Avenue Tolson View Park. McCarthy was active in village affairs, a Democratic committeeman, and longtime member and former chief of the Tremington Fire Department.
The Greenburgh Town Council appoints Gene Chillemi of 86 Central Avenue, Irvington to confidential secretary to Supervisor Edward H. Innett, effective June 11. Chillemi will assist in coordinating administrative functions across town departments and issue official notices to media and others. He previously served three years on The Daily News staff in Yonkers.
The State rate Commission informs the Board of Trustees at a special meeting that a delayed light at Broadway and Main Street in Loi ngton will allow a left turn from Broadway to Main when the green arrow appears on the south face of the signal. A holding period keeps north face red first. after, both faces show red then green for the turn. A manual switch will allow the signal to function as a flashing light during certain directed operations.
The Irvington Board of Trustees approved Liberty Coach Co. Inc. petition to run a bus line from North Tarrytown to the Woodlawn subway station on the Jerome Lexington Avenue line. Opposition came from Westchester Coach Co. which operates the North Tarrytown lines but agreed to a trial schedule of one trip per hour on Sundays after 4 p.m. The route avoids Broadway to Ashford Avenue and proceeds via Saw Mill River Road to the Thruway and Central Park Avenue to Woodlawn. Daniel McCarthy, once with the North Tarrytown lines, was killed fighting a fire on Harriman Road. his brother William and sister Mrs Campbell survive along with Thomas McCarthy of Irvington and William McCarthy of Tarrytown.
Irvington trustees appoint Lieut Roger A Fallon provisional chief to fill the vacancy from Chief Habermehl’s death. Exam date for lieutenant and sergeant to be set by county service for a restricted field. Provisional chief to maintain Habermehl salary until certified list and new appointment. The board adjourned in respect to Chief Habermehl with a formal resolution praising his service.
Frederick A Morabito of Stoun tain Road East Irvington will be graduated from Iona College at the twelfth annual commencement on Saturday afternoon June 9 at 8 30 p m on the college grounds Cardinal Spellman Archbishop of New York will preside at the outdoor ceremony where 321 men will receive baccalaureate degrees. One hundred twelve graduates are Westchester County residents.
The Irvington Democratic Club will hold an organizing meeting on Monday June 2 at 8 80 p m in Town Hall co chairmen Lynch and Seymour will submit proposed bylaws and slate of officers for group approval Two speakers will address the meeting William D Csulebach executive assistant to the New York State Commissioner of Commerce will speak as Democratic candidate for Congress and A Frank Reel will discuss the six year history of the Tarrytown Democratic Club All Irvington Democrats are invited to attend.
The Irvington sewer department posted a $6,252.87 surplus at May 31 prompting trustees to reduce the water charge from 48 to 40 percent of the bill. This change lowers the overall utility rate by about 0.58 percent. Sewer plant operation cost $18,897.28 from March 2, 1955 to May 31, 1956, with non plant sewer maintenance at $3,585.54, totaling $22,402.28.
In Irvington, Armbruster of Yonkers defeated Guinn for the 7th district congress nomination with four town districts and Greenburgh backing Armbruster by small margins. Greenburgh totals showed Armbruster 80 to Guinn 75, while Terrytown favored Guinn by 72. Contested races included state offices and convention delegates with varied margins across districts.
Chief Habermeht of the Irvington Police Department dies at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery services follow a heart attack that struck him December 11. He served 36 years in the force and six as chief, with an escort of police and fire crews at his funeral and church ceremony led by Rev. Philip Wolcott Furst.
