The Church of the Immaculate Conception mourns Reverend Father Eugene J Callahan, pastor of Irvington’s church, who died after a brief illness ending his tenure in fall 1951. He was known for forthright convictions and strong community ties, leaving a lasting impact on Irvington.
Louis Astuto of Irvington High School custodian staff has secured a U S patent for a new tomato variety. The long cultivated plants yield large fruit. he notes future potential for commercial table tomatoes and plans to protect his invention with the office of Patents. Astuto, with his wife and family in South Dutcher, began growing tomatoes in childhood and gained local attention as the neighborhood spoke of his prize tomatoes.
Second Lieutenant David Martinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Martinson, will be graduated from the Signal Officers' basic course at Yor Monmonth New Jersey, completing four months in the Officers' Depart nest of The Signs School. About 38 officers in the class.
The Irvington Red Cross 1954 bound drive begins with early gifts from individuals and firms as the special gifts committee led by Charles T. Stewart solicits community support. A fundometer will be set up on Broadway near Main Street Saturday, with Royal William as general chairman and Mayor Frederick Kramer presiding. Clergy will appeal at Sunday services as active campaigning starts Monday.
John A Murray of 28 North Eckar Street died at Grasslands Hospital after a brief illness from multiple strokes. Funeral services set for Our Lady of Mercy Church on Marion Avenue and Fordham Road at 8 AM Saturday. He leaves 16 sisters including Anna B Murray and Mrs W F Gilroy in New York City and Mrs Ralph Chapman of San Francisco.
Frederick Kramer mayor proclaims March Red Cross Month urging Irvington residents to support the Ameren Red Cross fund drive. The document notes the Irvington branch seeks 5000 dollars to fund Red Cross services and invites citizens to join and contribute. February 24, 1954.
Rogan and King were nominated for village trustees at a meeting in the Town Hall Tuesday, March 16, to oppose Republican incumbent Charles Patenian and Joseph C. Weedle in the Democratic and Republican races. The nominating session closed after a quick ballot, with Rogan of Ardley Park and King of Irvington listed as Democratic and Republican candidates respectively. Rogan, an attorney from 217 Broadway, has served as secretary of the Ardsey County Board of Governors. King, a lifelong Irvington resident and former Marine, is a carpenter and builder. Registration day is Saturday, March 6, with voters required to meet age, residency, and district rules to participate in the village election.
Mrs Jane Kelley longtime chair of the Irvington Board of Assessors died Sunday at age 90. She resided in Torytown until recently and funeral services were held at the Transfiguration Church in Tarrytowns with interment at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. She is survived by a son, a daughter, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Mrs John Downey longtime member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the Immaculate Conception Church died in Tarrytown Hospital after illness lasting months. Funeral services were held at the Immaculate Conception Church with burial at Sleepy Hollow cemetery. Survived by three daughters Evelyn Ward Helen Downey Mary Downey Irvington and two sons James Downey North Tarrytown John Downey of Tarrytown who is a news photographer with the New York Mirror and president of the As dui rand.
Sunday March 1 is designated for a village religious census to count residents across five churches. Arbert Vannatta and Rev Lee Ball organize with 1185 residences including 438 major apartments, inviting volunteers to assist from 3 to 5 PM.
Stera Gulli wed Paul A. Hoover in St. Martins Church Virginia. The bride wore a nylon gown and carried white flowers. Best man was David Be Joinson. groom’s brother Nicholas Gull and Albert Alden attended. After a wedding trip to New York and Canada they will live in Philadelphia. The bride and groom's education is noted at local schools and universities.
Mr and Mrs Benny D Agostino of Grey Rock Terrace left last Sunday for Dallas Texas to attend their son Howard Jaffray s wedding to Miss Orbara Stinnett daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Stinnett of Dallas The ceremony will be held at St Mary s Church in Sherinai Texas
The Rev. Eugene J. Callahan, longtime priest of the Immaculate Conception order and former pastor in White Plains and Montgomery, died Monday at Rosary Hill Hospital in New Rochelle. Funeral Masses and services followed a high mass at Holy Name Church and interment at Holy Mount Cemetery. Surviving siblings include Mrs. John Brink of New Rochelle and Mrs. Joseph Krevith of Pearl River. he had lived with sisters in New Rochelle after leaving active duties two years ago.

Miss Jane Madeleine Roane daughter of Dr and Mrs William Reane of 12 South Broadway will marry Starr Langley of New York City son of Mrs Lucille Miahiman and the late Victor Langley on Saturday afternoon at 4 PM at PlaC Miss Roane a Masters School graduate attended Skidmore College and is employed by NBC Mr Langley served in the Army Air Force has appeared in Broadway productions and now teaches voice in New York Times
The Youth Center aims for ten thousand dollars but has reached nine thousand one hundred eighty five with remaining gifts. Chairman Jarrell Puetiee notes most families in many districts have donated, and gratitude is voiced by Captain and Cadet leaders for widespread support. Treasurer Mrs. William Warnock reports signed donations are outstanding in a few cases. The board will meet Tuesday to review the final drive results, approve the budget, and plan spring activities for boys and girls of all ages.
Sunday incidents on multiple roads resulted in no injuries. Property damage occurred to several cars on CHRIS Fest Road Sun afternoon and Suningside Lane Broadway. A Cyrus Field Road crash by Thomas Corbett damaged a pine and front end. he faced a summons. A second evening crash on East Sunnyside Lane hit Leo Peters’s car. Vogeler admitted fault and agreed to pay.
Residents urged to take part in a ten day slogan contest organized by the Tevis Cardien Club to promote village beautification. Open to all Tevisland residents and students in Irvington schools. prizes announced through The Gazette with entry blanks available.
The_parent-teacher association will meet at 8 15 pm in the high school auditorium Monday March 1 with Mrs Charles Samper in charge. Dr Clarence C Dunsmoor rector of the Board of Cooperative Educational Services Westchester will speak on guidance counseling and lead a discussion.
