Editorial notes that Main Street traffic near Broadway to the railroad station runs near fifty miles an hour before train departures. Broadway limit is 30 and Main Street 20, yet vehicles descend the hill at about 40 to 50 mph. Police vow to curb speeding and warn violators that speeders should beware.
Lavington trustees plan a public hearing on March 2 to adopt an amendment to the Building Zone Ordinance barring motels hotels tourist cabins and courts from Residence C and apartment districts. A companion amendment would outlaw house trailers for living or sleeping.
Dr Ruth Seabury Lenton will keynote the 1953 Lenton series opening forum at the Masonic Temple Dobbs Ferry at 8 p.m. Sunday February 22. Her talk titled The Challenge to Christian Youth in the World Community targets youth audiences, highlighting her recent work in Japan and with American groups. Community Council of churches sponsors the series across Ardsey Dobbs Ferry Hastings and Irvington.
The Get Together Club of Hope Presbyterian Church will hold its forty first banquet on Tuesday February 24 at 7 PM in the Community House. Rev J St Clair Jeans of Hope Church will be guest speaker. William B Murray will give the address of welcome. George Pierce is toastmaster. Mrs Mildren Vanatta pianist will provide music. Jack Francisco directs entertainment. Banquet committee includes Harry Rosvally chair Harry Sinkking cochair Samuel Gilcheist program and James B Hance tickets. New officers elected for a three year term. The club organized December 23 1911 with charter members listed. About thirty members of the Rosary Society plan to attend a New York trip Tuesday evening to see The Angelic Doctor.
The Irvington Board of Trustees and the War Memorial Committee will again discuss a living memorial pool for World War I dead. A special committee aims to finish a plan for construction, maintenance, and administration to permit a referendum in April, with a pool size deemed at least 80 by 100 feet.
Mr and Mrs Gerald Cushman hosted a Valentine dinner party on Saturday February 14 at their South Dutcher street home. Guests included Mrs Eskwins on Valhalla Mr and Mrs Clarence Hilrich Elmsford and others from Pelham White Plains Manor and Irvington. Margaret Beswick returned home from Manhattan General Hospital after a two week stay.
A Monday benefit at Graham School expanded library facilities with roughly $1,000 raised. Door prizes were won by residents from Dobbs Ferry Yonkers Hastings Sleepy Hollow Irvington and others, including James W. BeCready and Mrs Stanley L. Riddett among winners.
Richard C. Wells as general chairman completes the roster for the 1053 American Red Cross Fund Campaign in Irving. The list includes Mrs. Ernest F Gehrmafin, Mrs. Samuel T. Gilcbust, Mrs. Werney Til, Mrs. Walter M. King, Mrs. G. J. Lawrence, Mrs. Horace 4. McAfee, Mrs. George B. D. Peterson, Mrs. Vincent B. Rey, Mrs. Charles B. Roberts, Mrs Wesley A. Shuler, and others.
The Board of Trustees decided to install seven mercury street lights along Main Street and Streat after evaluating a report from the Consolidated Edison Office. Two lights will be at Main and Astor, two on Main near Town Hall, one by the High School, and two at Bain and Broadway. The rest will be pendant lights eight feet out from poles, with total project cost about 3922 dollars including installation.
A Tucson Speech Center benefit for junior league reported a large Cinerama sale. Cochairman Mrs. Charles Bernuth of Scarborough announced the sale at the February meeting, with plans involving tickets and patrons from New York's Broadway Theatre.
Board schedules registration and village election hours after Monday meeting in Town Hall. New voters register Saturday March 7 from 9 AM to 12 PM. election Tuesday March 2 polls open 9 AM to 7 PM. Names of party nominees listed for three districts with Republican and Democratic candidates and note on registration in November.
Francis E Murphy a longtime Irvington police officer who retired in 1945 died suddenly of a heart attack in Minneapolis Minnesota last Thursday night he had lived with his daughter Lise Georgia Murphy a Northwest All Time hostess since selling his Brewster New York tavern business in 1940 He served in World War I and was wounded in Cuba His funeral was held Tuesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception with burial at Sloppy Hollow Cemetery He is survived by his mother a son Edward Murphy three sisters and a brother his daughter and others.
Unpaid taxes in Tevington amount to under 3 percent of the 1952 levy. The total levy was 216.58, with January 31 unpaid totaling 6,778.14. Since then, over 700 has been received, cutting the remaining balance to about 5,000. Interest rates apply 8 percent on the first installment due June 1 and 3 percent on the December 1 installment.
The Irvington Board of Trustees will hold public meetings Monday to discuss minor amendments to the Building Zit Ordinance and Building Code for the village. One amendment limits site placement by removing on Broad way or railroad right of way and prohibits route trailers from being used for living or sleeping purposes anywhere in the village.
Mrs Anna Soderman Olsen aged nearly 100 died at her daughter’s home on Mt Pleasant Lane East Irvington after a year in frail health. Born in Sweden September 28 1853 she moved to England then to the United States after 1909. Survived by two sons Lawrence Olsen and Joseph Olsen, a daughter Mrs John Frederick Pagan, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services set for Thursday evening at Mwards Funeral Home and burial Friday at Ferncliff Cemetery.
The Bloodmobile at Dobbs Ferry High School collected about 220 pints for residents of Irvington Dobbs Ferry Ardsley and Hastings last Friday. Mrs Addison B Hastings Blood Donor Chairman for Irvington praised the effort while Mrs B F McCall of North Cot ton Street lay as a patient at Tarrytown Hospital.
Irvington Republicans hold a meeting tonight to nominate village candidates for Tuesday March 27. A concerted effort to derail the Republican slate is rumored as Democrats prepare to caucus. John Mestaros of South Buckhout Street is named as a potential substitute candidate. a final pre primary meeting Friday will reveal the lineup for Saturday’s caucus.
The Youth Center fund drive has been extended for another week as contributions continue to arrive. To date funds total 2700. A Valentine Dance at the High School Auditorium on February 14 drew over 180 children with Mike Carey and his orchestra and Marjorie Gilchrist performing. Coca Cola donated to Irving High School via Marjorie. A lively school event titled Mardi Gras Dance Night featured special performances and a crowning ceremony for the Kinane Queen. Chaperones James Dinan and Mt. Cane assisted as prizes and other festivities were announced.
