Funeral services for Joseph Landy of East Clinton Avenue were held at Vande Funeral Home in Tarrytown after he died suddenly from a heart attack. The former village official, longtime resident and Republican committee member, left a wife and children and was active in church and local affairs. Arthur T Connick, son of Mr and Mrs Thon Con nick of Matthewsten Park, becomes one of 22 second lieutenants commissioned in the Army Air Corps Reserve at the University of Chicago ceremonies. He will serve as meteorological officer with weather forecasting and observation duties. Connick graduated from Irvington High School in 1997 and won the Go! Scholarship to New York University, where he earned an AT degree. He studied briefly at the university before joining the Air Forces.
Irvington may become the center of a Defense Gardens movement in Westchester County as Columbia University offers a course of lectures demonstrations and practice sessions at the Hamilton Arboretum in Nevis. The six week program runs April 18 to May 25 with weekly lectures from 11 to 12 and field work 1 to 4 30 daily, led by Professor Hugh Findlay.
The Irvington Children’s Museum discussed expansion of activities at its new quarters on the Columbia University Harton Rebore ion grounds. Open daily from March 1 including weekends, with classes and exhibits for children and adults. A community party is scheduled for February 26 to inaugurate the space. Twenty eight Boy Scouts joined a New York sightseeing trip with Scoutmaster Harvey L. Cromer, visiting the Empire State Building and theatre.
Scarlet fever cases show a decrease with several individuals recovering. Community leaders and local officials, including Rev. Lord Gilmour and Donald Woemley, report improvements as the village reports new cases reduced. Visitors plan to attend the Long-Sheham wedding in Sarborough on Saturday.
Jack Foley son of Patrolman Edward Foley of 102 Main Street is recovering at his home from head injuries after fainting and slumping into a sidewalk wall in front of Gristede's store last Saturday morning. He was en route to Irvington to join the scout troop and was kept for observation at Dobbs Ferry Hospital after police and ambulance assistance.
Irvington and nearby towns recorded 223 men registered on the third reserve service registration weekend at the Town Hall. Local Board No 74 lists 1588 registrants regionwide, with Tarrytown accounting for 54 and Irvington Elmford centers conducting four sessions to complete the count. Notables Adam McEadeen and Arthur C Lord were mentioned among registrants.
