Readers urge trustees to study a community swimming pool as a lasting memorial to local men who sacrificed for the country. They discuss sizes, costs from 80 000 to 125 000 and a 2.20 year bond plan, arguing a good pool suits the town and pride.
A Korea veteran from the Hudson River community recalls receiving 82 pints of blood during war injuries and urges others to donate. The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Ardsley Dobbs Ferry Hastings Nyavington on February 18 to collect blood from willing donors.
Rev A G Brossenbrook of Hastings announced five Sunday evening Lenten forums at the Masonic Temple in Dobbs Ferry from February 22 to March 22. Speakers include Dr Ruth Seabury on Christian youth, March 1. Mr John G Remsey on labor relations, March 8. Dr James Gordon Gilbey on church challenges, March 15. Mr Lee Bristol on industrial relations, March 22. and Nels Ferro on spiritual living through prayer.
The Woman's Society of St Pauls Methodist Church Irvington will sponsor a Games Party in the church social hall at eight o clock Thursday evening February 5. Warren Crawford is ticket chairman. Mrs Joseph Houghton and Miss Gloria Tilden assist. Mrs Ada Refbord visits Kentucky.
Archdeacon George F. Bratt of the Diocese of New York will conduct services at the Church of St. Barnabas on Sunday February 8 in Rector Rev Rich ard L Harbour's absence. Bratt will oversee parish and mission work, celebrate early Holy Communion, visit church school classes, preach at 11 o clock, and be in charge during February 8 through February 13. Board on Monday discussed widening Main Street lighting from South Axter Street to Broadway. Trustee Pateman to survey cost of installing mercury vapor lights along the entire street versus the plan to add seven lights and upgrade others. Residents petitioned against a 20 unit apartment project near Broadway and Hamilton Road, citing zoning and property value concerns.
The Thurs Club is sponsoring a bridge and tea on Tuesday February 17 at Graham School with patronesses including Mrs. Samuel Bronfman Mrs. Franklinines Mrs. John Sawyer Mrs Harold Vaughan and others. The library renovation continues as the recreation room is updated with draperies sofas a television set and a piano for receptions movies and child entertainment space.
Miss Ruth F Sturm of Hudson House Ardsley Path has been endorsed by the State Federation at Business and Professional Women’s Clubs for a federal appointment. Sturm, an Irvington Presbyterian Church officer, is linked to Judge Goovieve and the U S customs in New York.
Richard C. Wells was named chairman of the 1959 American Red Cross Fund Campaign in Irvington. The drive aims for a $5,000 quota, about ten percent above last year, to fund blood collection and gamma globulin production for polio defense, with March as the fundraising month. Wells, a Freeport Sulphur Co. VP and longtime Irvington civic participant, seeks strong local response as national goals rise to 33 million.
Funeral services for Mrs Florence Kipp Gelston were conducted at the Church of St Barnabas on Tuesday afternoon. She died Saturday evening at the hospital and is survived by her husband John M Gelston Sr and three children. The services were led by Rev Richard L arbour with interment in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Mrs Gelston born in Rhinebeck was longtime resident of Irvington and active in the church.
At Irvington High School the first PTA meeting of 1958 drew under 50 parents and 160 members skipped. Maria Tedesco and Walter Couver sang. teachers outlined business and English courses and lab work. Scholarship chair Richard Walls proposed increasing awards from 425 to 600 dollars, a plan unanimously approved. The annual scholarship bridge event was announced for April 25 in the school gym.
Airman First Class William A. Carrodi, with the Seventh Motor Transport, Korea, is recommended for Airman of the Year. He proudly represents Irvington High School heritage and work at a General Motors plant, noted for honesty, dependability, and top performance.
Mrs. Gouge Seeger of Ossining reports Kent Nixon, a Marine from Irvington High School, wounded January 28 in Korea, is moving to an Army base hospital in Japan for recovery after five blood transfusions. Nixon joined the Marines in March 1951 and served with the First Marine Division in Korea since November.
Police report a theft of more than a ton of copper ingots from the Nevis Cyclotron, a joint venture of Coimbra University and the United States Navy Depart. The copper, weighing 2260 pounds with a value of 5200, was stored at the site on South Broadway. Investigators Roger Fallon and Charles Habermeh, with patrolman Edward Foley, began probing the incident, which occurred between January 1 and January 2, with Warren Goods reporting the loss.
The campaign launch for the Youth Center Drive starts Tuesday with Mayor Fred Rama leading honorary supporters. Community figures including Coeall Pact and Maint Detar oversee planning as volunteers recruit at the campsite and local gatherings.
Mrs Norman E Gardner of Strawberry Hill North Broadway is chosen as chairman of the Tivington committee for the 1953 Heart Fund Campaign. Irvington trustees discuss a World War I memorial swimming pool for Matthiessen Park. A committee urges an $80,000 bond referendum on March 17, but the board seeks more planning data before endorsing a bond. The panel argues a modern pool with full facilities best serves the village.
Mrs Patrick Downey died at 25 South Ferris Street Monday evening after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception with a low requiem mass, and interment followed in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Downey, 77, had lived in Irvington 35 years with her husband and family. She was born in Newmarket County Cork Ireland. Survived by husband three daughters and a son, the family noted.
