Berkeley Marionettes open the Irvington Children's Theatre series with The Wonderful Well at the Elementary School auditorium drawing hundreds of Irvington and nearby children. Stephen and Florence Lowe bring the magic after 26 years of performance. ushers from Irvington High School assist. Next shows include Oscar Brand on January 11 and Rockefeller Productions Wizard of Oz on February 1. The Irvington High School music department presents its Christmas concert tonight at 8:30 with the Treble Clef Ensemble and Soloists Kirsten Falke Donald Cairns Jackie Vincent Bonnie Paton plus band and Choralettes.
Irvington High School Glee Club directed by Herbert L. Conlin presented a three part holiday program at Sunnyside featuring the Senior Choir Girls Glee Club Harmonaires and soloists with folk tunes spirituals and traditional melodies. Dr Harold Dear Cater praised the performance and students enjoyed cider cookies and molasses tea. Displays at Sunnyside and Philipsburg Manor remain open through New Year’s Day. The County Trust Company will pay a quarterly dividend of 12.36 cents per share on January 18 1958 to stockholders of record December 18 marking the bank’s sixth consecutive cash dividend.
Gennaro Grasso aged in his Tate iiies died at Grass ands Hospital after a long illness. He lived on Mountain Road in East Irvington and worked as a fireman at Lords & Burnham Company before entering construction. Survived by one son Anthony and three daughters plus eight grandchildren and two sisters in Italy. Funeral Friday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception with interment at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
Aoober and Miss Naom Bitz report at the Dobbs Ferry Hospital auxiliary meeting that the Dobbs Ferry High School Student Council presented a fifty five dollar check for an insulator for respiratory cases. Officers Gregory Til Marie Zevola and Albert Sfuscani led the presentation. The auxiliary plans to purchase overbed tables in memory of Mrs Evelyn Keane and to decorate hospital Christmas trees on December 19.
Irvington Board of Trustees adopted an ordinance banning all-night street parking beginning January 2. Permits costing 4 and 10 dollars will be issued by the Village Clerk for designated areas with tags displayed in windshields. Day parking in certain areas requires a resident permit. The meeting also reviewed street acquisition plans, property assessments, and zoning discussions with planning board input to study the proposed 36-page zoning ordinance and map.
The Greenburgh Town Council adopted a 1958 budget totaling 1,780,405 at a Friday meeting. The plan cuts about 39,000 from the initial 1,812,757 and raises estimated town revenues to 423,901. Major adjustments include a 20,000 reduction in the highway budget, a lower outside tax, and a 1.4 percent salary increase for most employees. The total town outside budget rises to 1,145,400 and the town entire budget to 865,856, reflecting added police, drainage, and recreation funding amid a 68,884 population and 218.4 million assessed valuation.
The annual Christmas concert by the Holmes Chemistry School features a program under the direction of Soto and Piytle water. The event, held at Suditarium, filled the audience with families and friends as the Holmes chemistry group concluded its season with festive performances.
Irvington Elementary Immaculate Conception School and Irvington House report 840 children enrolled in the Junior Red Cross Fund Drive, with high school students excluded. Donations reach about sixty dollars as Christmas activities proceed.
East Irvington School will be occupied by district pupils starting September 1958 to relieve overcrowding at the Elementary School on Dows Lane. The move, approved at the regular monthly meeting, uses the East Irvington building for younger grades as rooms are scarce for the coming school year. John Francis Smith, board president, cited the Citizens Committee's population study begun last spring.
Anne Eddison of Ardsley Park and Mt. Desert Island Maine announced her engagement to Stanford H. Brainerd son of Mr and Mrs Howard S Brainerd of Easton Pa and Haddam Conn She attended Chapin School St timothy s School Maryland Vassar and Harvard GSD Later with Architects Collaborative in Cambridge Mass The couple connects to prominent families including Corbin Edisons Ship and Ewing Brainerds also noted are school and college affiliations for both families with references to Yale Harvard and J P Morgan.
Village churches in Irvington and nearby areas plan Advent and Christmas observances. Irvington Presbyterian will feature morning and candlelight services with junior and senior choirs, greens, and carols. The Church of St Barnabas hosts Nine Lessons and Carols and a 1:00 pm confirmation, with a creche on the lawn and Advent sermons by the Suffragan Bishop of New York. The season emphasizes traditional hymns, readings, and parish carols led by choirs under noted directors.
The Irvington Fire Department expects its new aluminum extension ladder in service the first week of January. Autoeln Inc will supply and install the ladder on the department’s ladder truck in Woodbridge NJ. The ladder extends to 5 feet and will be mounted with an automatic hoist for one man operation.
