Strong opposition to pontoon bridge by river boatmen
At a New York City meeting, Hudson River steamboat and ferryboat men formed committees to protest Senator Frelinghuysen’s pontoon bridge plan. Eben Olcott and Brice Broad were tapped to organize against the proposal. A second committee prepared to meet War Department officials August 31. They warned the bridge would ruin traffic on the Hudson, hinder night and fog navigation, and offer little congestion relief.
