The Evolution of Paint Through History and Industry
The article traces paint from symbolic body decoration to decorative use by ancient Egyptians Greeks and Romans, then follows its shift to preservation and the rise of white lead and its hazards. It covers Dutch and English processes, the shift to machine ground pigments, the advent of ready mixed paints around 1860, and the modern paint chemist’s role in forming a systematic industry. It notes the growing demand for varied tints, the replacement of white lead in interior and exterior paints, and the impact on painters and supply chains.
