Audubon Society Notes on Louisiana Bird Sanctuary Formation
The Audubon Society notes that Mrs. Russell Sage and the Rockefeller Foundation enabled Louisiana to establish a vast bird sanctuary. Lands totaling about 668 square miles will be held by the state in perpetuity, across 364 000 acres, forming the world’s most extensive protected migratory bird refuge along the Gulf and Mississippi Valley routes. The sanctuary aims to protect migratory birds from threats that felled the passenger pigeons, with state legislation soon to formalize governance and access.
