Art student builds proa boat for Catalina voyage
Yaron Hakim, 32, a UCI art student, spent nine months crafting a proa from a boat design rooted in the Marshall Islands. He plans to sail Unitea from the campus gallery to Santa Catalina Island, aiming for a voyage that centers on the journey rather than the destination. Newport Aquatic Center director Billy Whitford supported and aided Hakim with trailer space and a launch. Hakim’s globetrotting upbringing underlines his art, monk years in India, and belief that the voyage is the space between two spaces. He hopes to complete the Catalina crossing before summer’s end, then return to Panama where his parents reside.
