Gogebic County Fair gearing up at the fair grounds with committees finishing preparations. Exhibits by local merchants and doubled premiums promise an expanded farm product display, plus races, mining era curiosities, and horse events with a complete premium list available at the post office.
In a McLeod avenue saloon a scattered party of revelers drank and sang as a dirk knife wounded Anton Miloch. Peter Ferrer pleaded guilty to assault and was fined seventy dollars plus six days in jail. he is jailed in Bessemer. Joe Jatczak faced a seduction charge by Ella Hegolinsh, but the complaint was withdrawn as he promised marriage.
The public schools opened Monday morning marking the start of a new term. Superintendent Wwelt reports the work underway smoothly with high expectations for a successful session. Several teachers faced boarding challenges and some resided at the Burton house in Hurley, with plans to relocate soon. The first football game of the season is set for this afternoon.
Rev and Mrs W McCraelken hosted a reception for public school teachers at the Rectory on Thursday evening. Profs Wright and Haller with their wives assisted. Miss Laura Kumm Miss Church Miss Mayity Miss Loxmore Miss Sleight and Mr Willer provided instrumental music. About sixty guests attended and enjoyed the evening. Four high school girls served refreshments.
Judge Durand, Democratic candidate for governor, has suffered a stroke with serious but slightly improving condition. Right side paralysis may bar continued candidacy. Democratic leaders discuss replacing Durand with State Senator James Willeling of Adrian, though no action yet.
The Wisconsin Central will sell round trip tickets to Waukesha for 5.00 on their evening train September 15 with return at 4 p.m. from Waukesha. It offers a chance to visit famous mineral springs and other attractions in Waukesha.
A letter from W. S. Brockman of Bagnell Missouri praises Chamberlain Cough Remedy for three years of bronchitis with sleepless nights. He tried several doctors and medicines before relief came after his wife obtained a bottle. The note states the remedy is for sale by M. F. Mc Cabe & Co druggists.
