The Parks Division of the Department of Conservation announces 45 emergency Conservation Work camps aiding improvements in 23 Michigan state parks. Mason Camp will be set near Ludington and improvement work will occur at Ludington State Park and Pera Marquette Park along the river southeast of Scottville. He had vetoed a bill granting osteopaths rights similar to medical doctors before leaving. former Gov Fred W Green vetoed a similar measure two years ago.
Governor Comstock may sign a bill imposing a $2 annual poll tax on every state resident to fund an estimated $6,000,000 for old age pensions. The tax applies even to non citizens and those not eligible to vote. The term poll tax refers to a head tax rather than a voting poll.
The three per cent sales tax becomes effective July 1 as the state analyzes penny by penny its revenue. If retail state business is half the 1929 level, the tax could yield about 82 million dollars annually. Fitzgerald, a Sole Republican in the capital, notes July 1 lands next Saturday with Frank D. Fitzgerald as secretary of state.
Murray D. Van Wagoner will lead the state highway department and Dr. Paul F. Voelker will head public instruction, succeeding Grover C. Dillman and Webster H. Pierce. Fitzgerald remains the lone Republican elected official after November and April elections. The gasoline tax after July 1 will total about 4.25 cents per gallon, with 3 cents state tax, 1.25 cents federal tax, and 3 percent sales tax distributed by agencies.
