J Wellington Huss, assistant manager of the Upper Michigan Wisconsin Broadcasting Co, is named manager by the board. He succeeds N C Ruddell who resigns after 12 years in charge and will assume duties Jan 17. Huss is a Marquette Northern State college graduate with Michigan work and a former Alpena junior high principal. Mrs Huss is Lois Erspamer, daughter of Hurley residents. The Ruddell tenure included leadership roles in commerce and local service clubs.
A 1942 message from Egypt by George Oberlander wishes readers in wartime to keep heart and spirit bright. It prays for peace and joy this Christmas season and boundless health and happiness in the new year.
The Ironwood Association of Commerce will hold its annual meeting at the St. James Hotel on Monday January 4. The group will launch its annual membership drive shortly after the meeting.
Ironwood Times founder Walter S. Goodland announced he was appointed governor of Wisconsin after the Supreme Court ruling. He planned to travel to Madison to address the budget and begin a new administration, saying he would serve Wisconsin with his best efforts.
Rudolph E. Lundgren, 39, who had been ill since last fall, died at 8 a m Monday at the home of his brother in law and sister, Mr and Mrs E L Swan, Ironwood. He was born May 2 1903 in Ironwood and educated in local schools, graduating from Luther L Wright high school in 1921. Survivors include his sister and two brothers, Mrs Swan, Edward of Anvil and Milton of Detroit. Funeral services will be held at 2 p m today from Nyberg funeral home with Rev C W Eckland officiating.
The Ironwood Theatre hosts a special New Year’s Eve program at 11:30 featuring Twentieth Century Fox’s Technicolor musical Springtime in the Rockies. The annual event continues New Year’s Day and Saturday with the same film on screen.
Ed Leahy of Detroit is spending a few days in Ironwood and will return to Detroit on Thursday. He travels for a brief stay and plans to resume duties after his visit.
John B. Chappell, treasurer, announced the local Salvation Army drive surpassed the $2,000 quota on Monday. He thanked the community for their contributions and said a detailed statement will be published by the officers and committees.
The 50 year history of St Ambrose Academy was celebrated with capacity crowds at events anchored by a Pontifical High Mass led by Bishop Francis Magner. 300 graduates attended the Monday banquet, while 400 were seated with 150 turned away.
