Kennedy Rites Monday For Ironwood Civic Leader J S Kennedy

Funeral services for J S Kennedy 74 longtime Ironwood resident were held Monday at 2 30 p m at the McKevitt Kershner Patrick funeral home Rev G A Kaltenbach officiated Kennedy born June 21 1867 in Nebraska City Neb came to Ironwood in 1894 to manage the water works later owned and sold it in the 1890s He held posts including food administrator for the Upper Peninsula deputy internal revenue collector city manager in 1936 and poor commissioner Survived by wife Julia three sons Karstens of Bismarck Neb Robert D of Superior and James S Jr of Duluth and two sisters.

WJMS Radio Marks Ten Years of Service in Gogebic Range

The Ironwood station began regular service at 7 30 a m on November 1 1931 after tests and moved transmitters in 1935. It notes one day of silence during the move and credits public stockholders as stepping stones to sustaining the venture with local and national programming for northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

In September 1931 Noel C. Ruddell moved from WBOW Terre Haute to Ironwood to organize, install, and manage WJMS as general manager. He and staff built a growing, influential station whose leadership drew inquiries from other markets as Depression Years pressed on.
